[quote=sidekick;1691697]why do we have to do this? QUOTE]
so you can develope each others social skills and feel more comfortable around each other. trust me jake, you will not learn a thing in university if you are not willing to get to know every last person in each of your classes. fact of life. |

In university everyone is so focused on their grades, workload and themselves - at SFU everyone wanders around looking at their own toes and for the most part totally misses out on the social aspect of university. It did not used to be like this----------------. If people do not get to know one another in their tutorials, then what will the conversations in there looklike? WE are so used to being spoonfed info rather than having to make it mean something through speech ...You will see, everyone will sit quietly twiddling their thumbs when it comes time to talk
And as a teach I think that is a darn shame - so, yeah, maybe the 'get to know you' game isn't the greatest, but it helps yur T.A learn your name (important) it gives you a chance to see what other types of folks are in your class(important) and hopefully it helps everyone to realize that everyone else is feeling ackward. so, cut the process some slack and see the greater good at work. |

i don't really agree with that. i mean, i know that it's important to socialize, but that's not what annoys me about the ice breakers. i'm going to make friends in all my classes. that's just a given. what i hate is how its forced upon everyone on the first day. you don't actually learn anything of value from those ice breakers. if you're going to make a connection of some kind it's going to come in a conversation after class or something, not in listening to everyone rattle off their name and year.

"hi my name is jake. hmm...interesting fact about myself, eh? let me see...oh, well there was this time this summer where i was walking on the abandon railroad tracks, you know the ones that go down to kerrisdale? anyway, i was walking along them just minding my own business, when suddenly there is this other guy walking along the tracks toward me. there's no one else around, so i pulled out my hunting knife, which i keep tucked into the waistband of my underwear and gutted him as he walked by. he made this weird sound, and then dropped to the tracks as his insides spilled out onto the rails. then i made an incision at the top of his neck and pulled his spine out. oh yeah, i also went camping with my family in kelowna."
