My guitar never leaves me side when I travel by bus now..
Im not sure how I would handle the plane situation.

Don't Pack like an Idiot. It's simple. Once your stuff isn't in your possession and it's going to be handled many many times and transported by various methods. If it's valuable and carry-on size, take it with you. If it's bigger, make sure it's bulletproof.
Just so People know, it's not always damaged from the People that handle your Luggage. The Belt System that transports your Bags from the Check-In Counters to the underbelly of the Terminal to the Bag room has what's called "Kickers" (DURRRRR Why might they be called that?) that give the Bags a 'kick' down the Beltsystem, through corners in it etc. Sometimes it's a pretty brisk one.
