Man work your way up. Fucking practice like a son of a bitch and make your way up on your skills. Dont count on getting hooked up with promoters. It will be a lot more satisfying when you get booked based on your skills, not because your friend was a promoter.

my first party ever was the uh-oh it's twisted pre-party at spanish>>>that was after 3 monthss of spinning>>>>>i tagged with precise and for anyone who was there.....i apologize. i was definately not prepared ....ryan's headphones we're crap and i took the needle of the record that was playing...not good. then the next day i played at the the actual party at riverside.......all i can say is that im not booked for uh-oh it's twisted 2 .
anyone can mix 2 records and EVERYONE is a dj these days so my advice is if you're gonna start playing in van. make sure you're super confident on the decks so that you blow people away but at the same time im the type of person who needed to do that to experience what it was like plaing out>>>>then i hibernated. Nolan, i was just saying that a lot of the local talent that spins at partys fucking suck. I know we got lots of good headliners, Ive seen pretty much every DJ i have ever wanted to see in Vancouver. music wise the club scene is much better. I was talking about the ghetto ass party DJs that get booked because there friends are the promoters.

I've been spinning for almost 2 years and I still suck and I don't really have any motivation to play in front of a crowd until I get a lot better.
I think it's taking me so long because I don't practice that often, and I keep changing my mind about which genre I want to spin. At first I like the idea of trance, but then when I got out of my newbie stage and got some music taste I decided that I wanted to spin D&B. Since then, about a year and a half ago, I've changed my mind twice: I wanted to spin breaks, and now I'm going to start spinning funky hip hop. There are A LOT of club hip hop DJs in this city but not a lot that play underground and oldschool - especially at "rave" parties. So I think I could go somewhere with that. Mostly though, I just spin for fun and I don't really ever expect to play big parties or anything. I played my first party 4 months after I started spinning - it was this ghetto barn party in Aldergrove, and Jason made fun of me because I sucked and he was drunk *sad face* heh. I didn't spin again until TalkSic Tuesdays came back last July. I opened for one of the nights, I guess I did alright considering that I picked up my vinyl from a friend THAT NIGHT and I hadn't even had a chance to put a set together or anything! I've played a couple of house parties in the past as well, but it's just been when my friends were spinning and the forced me onto the decks to play a few mixes while they went and drank. heh. All in all, I have no idea why I just typed all of that out, except for the fact that I'm sitting at work, bored, getting paid 10.50/hr to surf f+k...sweet =0) |

Come on guys, if you EVER go to parties in Vancouver, especially smaller, illegal parties, you MUST know. And even THOSE people aren't as bad as some of the damn MCs that think they're "THE SHIT" when really all they are is "SHIT" and they get up on the mic and totally ruin the DJs set. If some asshole ever did that to me I swear I'd grab the mic and beat his/her ass with it! |
