hmmm.... that a very interesting point of view.
I really need to come out to some of the nights you go to. I too am dying to hear some new material. Don't get me wrong,,, right now my passion is mainly progressive,,, but I mean in that in saying that's what I love playing. I love hearing new styles and tracks that I don't have,,, I would necessarily play them myself but it would be a nice change. I haven't been overly impressed with ANY preformance I've seen this year,,, so you can bet I have high expectations for INGO and Tiesto,,, although completely different styles. But I know I missed alot of good shows ie. Deep Dish x 2,,, Lee Coombs,,, John Creamer,,, Carl Cox,,, Pete Tong,,, and of course Ritchey Hawtin. Also... I'll miss Sander Kilenberg because he's spinning the same night as Tiesto. anyways... i'm just rambling on here,,,, you know the score. ps You should come to see INGO this sat. I'll put you on the list. peace. |

electro already is huge. all the scenesters in nyc, montreal, berllin, london (basically all the cities that define what the next big thing is) have been humping that sound for well over a year. the media is sucking its dick too ... uk rags like the face are all over it ... hyping it as the coolest thing since anal sex. montreal dj/producer tiga has become the poster boy for the sound .. the remix he did of 'sunglasses at night' hit number 1 in mtv europe. my problem with electro is that the scene revolves around people who seem to be doing their best to be really cool, and subsequently really pretentious. the genre itself has produced some very very good tracks, but for the most part it's just rehashed 80s shite. i'm sure there'll be enough bandwagoners to get some sort of electro scene here going, but i doubt it'll be anything long term or significant. i doubt the entire electro movement will be able to sustain itself ... the music isn't good enough and the fanbase is largely people who are just tryin to be cool. as long as it's contributing to the evolution of electronic music and is bringing something new to the culture, i have no problem with it (i just don't really like it). there are some producers who are being creative and experimental with the sound .. steve bug, jori hulkonnen, funk dvoid, samuel sessions, dj hell, jesper dahlback .. but then there are the rest of em who are just puttin out the cheeziest, most annoying synth lines since who knows when.
the nice thing about progressive is that while most of the huge djs these days are labelled as 'progressive djs', they play a hybrid of styles from pure progressive house, to tech house, to deep deep trancey house, psy trance, tribal house, electro (funk dvoid styles), breakbeat and progressive trance. progressive is boring as fuck if you're only listening to pure progressive for 3+ hours .. but none of the big djs these days are doing that ... give them 2-8 hours and they'll drop a variety of styles ... they just have enough time and enough skill to know how to blend it without you even noticing. i think progressive (by progressive i'm referring to all the styles that i mentioned before that are attached to it) gives the dj an opportunity to construct something really special .. i know it's cliched but a good progressive dj can take you on the journey of your life. while electro is fun music ... it's generally quite cheesy, cookie cutter material ... it's like ukhh except with more credibility because it's being touted as the next big thing. progressive on the other hand has been around for a while now and it isn't going anywhere, mainly because there's so much room for variety and evolution within the genre (from deep and trancey to slammin and tribal ... i guess it depends what you label progressive). there's a reason it's the type of music that has dominated the top clubs in the world for 5+ years ... |

People here in Vancouver don't really know what progressive is because it isnt played at raves at all! There are a few clubnights that promote the progressive sound, but not that many... I have to admit, it took me a lil bit to appreciate progressive. Its very simple, and 2 hours of straight up progressive can get seriously fuckin boring. But when its presented right, mixed up with tribal, techno, house, psy trance whatever, its so much damn fuckin fun to dance to!! The music becomes very unpredictable, theres different kinds of buildups, really trippy electro riffs... its great!
lately vancouver has been all about funky music (house and breaks... and a lil bit of drumnbass). Before funk became popular, it was all about broken beats..... like you said, people jumped on the bandwagon... if you liked trance, hard house, anything with a 4 by 4 bass kick beat, you were not cool, which is pretty damn fuckin lame. well my point is, its time that vancouver really had a taste of whats really out there, and the booming world wide progressive scene hasnt touched our little city just yet. and when it does and people really start to appreciate it, i can see raves getting packed with people going wild to progressive house and trance.... progressive brings so many elements of electronic music, dating back to the 80's and this present day... and i just love it! |
