Hard House / Nu NRG
Anybody miss this genre?
Everybody I've talked to either really loves or really hates the bumpy jumpy poppy hard house nrg sound that pretty much dominated the later years of the 90's and lasted well into the 00's It's still around and from what I hear Tidy Trax is still putting out records!!! The other half of nrg (namely artists like Dark By Design) is pretty much still around too but the genre has pretty much lost it's appeal to me since around 01. I don't know maybe I miss the in your faceness of the Tidy/Shock/Nukleus sound. Either way the music certainly hasn't aged well. I'd be embarrassed to play Nine Bar in one of my sets, but that doesn't stop me from remembering what it was like to love that music with a legitimate passion. To me, it was music that belonged, florished and reveled in it it's own time. What does everybody think of this dayglow abortion of a genre? |

It goes that way for most general electronic genre, the differences between the Trancers and Junglists is Apples to Dragons.

No, I dont miss it, becuase I still play it haha! Ive been throwing some of the older bouncy HardHouse into my sets latley and people have been loving it. I dont think it actually died, I think people just got caught up in the newer styles coming out and it got pushed to a back burner!
Fuck whatever people say about how it sucks and/or whatever. I still love it, and I know a lot of other people who do to! |

I remember Jon the Dentist showing me photos of his young mistresses across the world on his mobile phone at the RhythmNation makeup party. Good times.

it's unchallenging, boring, garbage music that's easy to make, easy to DJ, has the emotional dynamics of a dog, a shelf life measured in nanoseconds, and appeals only to the lowest common denominator and fucktards. there, now i'm an asshole. |

Seems to me your getting pretty defensive here lol and I never said anything about my opinion needing more respect or anything then mine. The question imposed by this thread was looking for people who enjoyed this style of music, but you came in and stated how you dont understand how people can like it. I never attacked you, I said in the same form as you did, how I dont understand why people feel the need to state they dont like it when people are trying to find others who do like it. ... This is why I dont post on FnK much anymore. Everyone jumps on everything people say, and everything MUST be an attack at someone else. Sorry I hurt your feelings! |

My problem with FnK isn't so much that everybody jumps all over it, it's just that everybody assumes that you're jumping on it and reacts. Christ, I just posted four words and you see the animosity I get for it? Blaming most of that on Myles though, he seems to revel in calling me a bitter jaded asshole, like he's any less of a hater or something. OMG I DISLIKE THE MUSIC YOU LIKE, I MUST BE A NOBODY. Please.

People have just as much right to say they don't like something just as much they have the right to say they do.
And once again this thread has been a perfect example at the 50/50 response genres like hard house seem to get. Thanks to everybody who gave their honest opinions one way or the other ;) That being said I'm happy to hear there's still those out there who still like this stuff even though it hasn't aged well. Or maybe it's like fine wine :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy: |

The appeal of HH/NRG is pretty much the same as any party-dance genre, if you think about it. Simple formula makes it easy to dance to. offbeat basslines make the music "bouncey", making it very fun for people on ecstasy. I can't really explain the appeal of the hoovers other than to say that some people are as obsessive about the hoover as I am of the acid line.
Frankly I still like a lot of the early HH/NuNRG stuff... Commander Tom, anything that came out of Tinrib before they got rid of the 303s, heck, I even had a Klubbheadz track or two in my collection back in the day. I understand the appeal, I just grew out of it just under a decade ago. Kinda like Speed Garage in that respect. Time moves on. There's probably going to be a resurgence of this stuff in about 10 years time, after the Rave and Trance revivals kick in, but before we get another Disco revival. Right now we're just getting past the acid-house revival, which a lot of people are confusing with "electro" even it really has nothing to do with electro anymore (the whole "electro" genre gave up on actual electro around a year or two ago). |
