Peer DJ pressure
Ok what I want is some imput to the age old question "How many crowd pleasers (anthems) should one play in their set".
I wonder this cuz, I get booked all the time if my tape is chalked full of anthems but when I make a tape with less known tracks (breaks) on it I have a hard time getting booked. When I play, I like to keep people dancing, but when I play the stuff that I really like and if it's not an anthem nobody dances to it except for my four friends in the front (who are probably only dancing out of respect). I don't want to be an anthem DJ but I look at other DJ's that play breaks and get booked all the time and all they play are the crowd pleasers that have been around for the past six months. Am I thinking about this too much? Should I just say fuck it and start playing what everyone else is playing? Do people even want to hear new stuff all the time? Lets hear some responses... I say use anthems as tools to get everyone on the floor, then hit them with less-known but still very danceable tracks right after.
I find that really gets me going sometimes. I'll be sitting around at a party, then the dj throws down one of my favorite tracks and it gets me up on the dance floor. After they mix into the next one, I'm still up there dancing and I end up dancing for quite awhile. |

I can honnestly say, never.
I have never thrown a crowd pleaser in.
For fucks sake the crowd hasn't even heard the songs I've played before (unless they've seen me play before) Last two shows I swore at the crowd cuz they were god damn pussies. (they thought that was a mosh pit? WTF?) Remeber, junglaist hate ninja Boy, y0! |

Ahh I totally see where you are coming from too! That is a tough situation. It seems people will get up and move to stuff they've heard before. That is something that really sucks about Vancouver's scene, it's hard to bring something new into it. Although, I was thinking about this with a friend, if you don't want to be a Anthem Dj, then don't! Best bet, is to do little teases of crowd pleasers in your set. I mean, that would totally work, it would get everyone moving and interested again, then just put on your next track. That way, your set isn't full of crowd pleasers, just little bits of them throughout. I've seen this done ONCE before and it really works. It appears as if the dj is playing crowd pleasers, but is really playing the good shit that no one's heard before. But I guess you gotta read your crowd. GOOD LUCK

My god!
Nobody can take a joke!
SHeesh!!! You people UNDERSTAND THIS: I have said this many times: I LOVE JUNGLE I dance to it as much as I do for HHC I have lots of friends who are "jungalist". It's a joke BUt on a side note, mc groove and his crew could use to SHUT UP. Those guys are being dorks, and basically bashing on me constantly (not online) cause of the music I play. and the fact that one of them punched my mc.... |
|
||||
Sorry I went a little nuts, but this is something like the 50th time I've had to deal with this.
I also get a lot of heat from Jungalist (in real life, like when I saw mc groove and his possy on the beach) because they think since I spin hhc, that I ain't cool enough for jungle. It's pretty damn fustrating. as a famous comedian once put it: "I get no respect, no respect I tell ya" |

Don't get me wrong.... I think whoever did that was pretty out of line, but Dave's whole 'lets make fun of jungle MCs' thing was pretty disrespectful as well. Funny as hell when I first saw it, but now that I think about it, it was extremely disrespectful. I just hope neither he, nor Dawson's crew try to pull anything against each other anymore. |

The Crowd
ay.
perhaps you aren't spinning for the right crowd? maybe you need to get in front of a crowd that has enough appreciation for your taste in music to dance? Crowds are quirky. I've seen them not dance to music that everyone thought was fucking awesome... and dance like hell to music that everyone the next day says was shit. Try a different time slot - you might get a different reaction? peace www.wickedhouseparty.org |

correct me if im wrong....but isn't it ur job as a dj to ensure that the people like the music.....isn't it wise to show up early and see waht the crowd likes that nite and spin something that u think would get the crowd hyped accordingly......
i don't know about u but if i was a dj and no one liked my set id see it as me not doing my job right....that is what u get paid for is it not..... i don't mean to hinder a dj's "creative" side.....but if the crowd doesn't like ur shit then maybe u should be doing something that will keep them on the floor rather than u perfecting ur "style"....shouldn't u save that for ur own time and bring it out when u see fit as well as the crowd..... maybe i have no fuckin idea of what im talkin about and u could take this as me tellin a dj to sell out......but if u don't.....how else are u gonna get booked again...............maybe u should wait till ur a lil more well respected before u start allowing urself to have more say of whats spun at the party..... if i was a promoter or whatever and i saw that the crowd didn't like what a dj i booked was spinning that would reflect badly on me not only the dj...... so if i were to offer my much wanted advice..*pfft*...id try to mix it up a bit like was suggested earlier....play a pleaser and mix in some new shit or some personal fav..and see where it takes you......if they don't go for it then i think the massive has spoken.... corrie |

Really, if you want to go anywhere as a DJ, then you're going to have to love the music that you spin. This may mean you won't get as many bookings as you would if you played mainstream shit, but who cares. If you're in it for the money, then I'd recommend you DJ top 40 shit because it pays 15x more and costs 100x less.
Personally, I love trance. I breathe trance. Trance fucking owns me, I listen to it all the time, I love dancing to it, and you can be damn sure that I love spinning it. I'm sure if I spun deep sexy house I could get bookings at a lot more places, but that isn't my objective. If I can get a crowd that appreciates the music I play, even if it's only once, then I will be the happiest mofo ever. I've done enough top40 dj'ing to realize that if you don't like the music you're playing, then you simply will not have a good time. And if you're not having a good time, then why do it? So Cowboy, to answer your question, if I was booked for a party and none of the crowd liked trance, I wouldn't spin a house set for them. I'd question the promoter as to why they got me there to begin with, and if the crowd didn't like my music, then so be it. If your heart isn't in what you spin, if you don't honestly love the tracks you're throwing down, then fuck it, you're wasting everyone's time, especially your own. |

I agree with Sean
Play what you like unless you want to be the next Chris Sheppard. I could give a rats ass what the crowd thinks....crowds can kiss my brown ass.
More seriously though, i spin what i like...like yesterday i played a set that went from breaks, 2 step, some trance and progressive....and then my last track was "baha men - who let the dogs out" I mean wtf was i thinking? hehehe, i enjoyed myself though and had an even better time when I dared Paul (DJ deepgroove) to mix into it....it was funny...and theres no better way to close your set than with "who let the dogs out". :219: I have a pretty diverse record collection....when i play its a reflection of the mood i'm in...like lately i've been pissy and feel like spinning jungle...so next weekend i'm gonna go buy some. I have no aspiration to "reprezent tha junglist massive" i just feel like playing it....after that i might feel like playing diva house. just my 2 cents. drummer:188: |

yah
I was a Top 40 DJ at a cabaret in 1995, and at that time I had the funniest fucked-up crowd phenomena happen to me... Made me laugh.. I'll share it:
It was like June and I just got the CD for Dance Mix 96 (Muchmusic). **Note - I hate all this crap now.. with the exception of a few particular tracks** before it was released. The stuff was out on the radio and everything so it wasnt like the tracks themselves werent released yet.. And I had this person in the crowd come up to me and ask me to play something more recent... Like from Dance Mix 95. I laughed my ass off. I showed this barstar broad the CD case and didnt really say anything. Then she said - can you play something I've heard before then? I like the more classic stuff. Bwahaha.. Sometimes there just 'aint no pleasing a crowd. They want it cutting edge and classic at the same time. Just do your best to break off a set that you would love to hear. **Note - unless this is like super-experimental-breaks-jungle-trance-live PA-NRG and you're not quite sure that your crowd is ready for something THAT different . peacout |

my record collection has about 200 trance anthems.
Now-a-days i've been bring back some of the old school trance, for when i make a new demo, the people that i give it to will be like "wow, i havent heard this in a while" its some good shiet. later - SoniK |
