i was there december 2001 - early january 2002

that sounds like a dope night... i wanted to check out the house scene but didnt get to it... i heard home on saturdays had a descent house night but was for a more older and fancier crowd.

were you there at the same time? you've mentioned field day so i'm presuming you were there at the same time?

I saw Eric Morillo at summerlove, he was pretty damn good Ill admit (although the second half of his set was pretty boring IMO). However, 75% of all wellknown house DJs come from the US, and from the live sets, mix CDs and shows Ive been to, I know Morillo doesnt come close to someone like DJ Dan, ROger Sancehz, Derrick Carter, David Morales, Little Louie Vega, Mark Farina and the list goes on. Shit Id say Tyler Stadius from Vancouver is a better mixer than Morillo.

WiWcHaR, u said youre a huge fan of his production? Yeah, so am I, but just because he produces sweet tracks (he hasnt in some time tho), doesnt mean his DJ skills are good. Dont get me wrong, Morillo is a great DJ, but there are plenty who do it better than he does. He is probably, however, one of if not the most respected house DJs around, but its mostly because he owns Subliminal and hes a damn good businessman.

Martin, who the best DJ in the US is I dont know. My favorites Dj Dan, but I can tell u Eric Morillo is not the best DJ in the US.

have you seen roger sanchez? derrick carter? david morales? lil louis vega? mark farina?

when i used to follow house, which was a while ago, i followed most of those names and IMO, erick morillo on his best days blows most of the names (on their best days as well) you listed right the fuck away. erick morillo is extremely creative on the decks. to pull off the stuff he probably wants to pull takes alot of energy as well as serious fuckin skill since he always uses a sampler and 3 turntables at his shows. but hes also human and its hard to pull off serious dj tricks consistantly well every single time on different live setups.

i guarantee you mike that most of these opinions you might of read on other message boards or mixmag are opinions of other people.... and you know what? they can be the biggest fuckin retards as well so why trust what someone else said?

i've seen both of those djs as well. dj dan is good in his own league and morillo is good in his other league. they touch different scenes of house u dumbass. since when were you born the house guru to say that dj dan is better than erick morillo?

besides that, its unfair to say who is the best dj and who isnt since theres so many different personalities and personal cultues/backgrounds that influence music to really pin down who the best dj is.

*sigh* Martin for fucks sake u dont even know what youre saying. Did u even read my post completely before you replied?

First off, I didnt say I saw all the Djs live, I saw some, but Ive lisened to fucking endless amoutns of live sets by all those DJs that I named and more, personally I think its a better way to judge someone mixing skill than hearing it live, since u can pay alot more attention to whats happening since its not so loud and u can go back and listen to it. However, its true u cant judge someone stage presence and crowd control through listening to recorded live sets.

Martin, I spend a very good portion of my days listening to house sets trying to learn from them, house is the only music that Ill put on when Im by myself(doesnt mean I dont like other genres but when i have a choice i listent to house). Just like you've listened to endless hours of jungle, Ive listened to endless hours of house. Shit when I was home for 2 weeks in Europe, thats all I did, since I had nothing else to do. I think I know what Im talking about in terms of good house mixing, Im not saying Ima fucking sweet DJ, but I can tell good mixing from excellent mixing. Also, I NEVER once in my posts said Erick Morillo was a bad DJ, in fact I said he was damn good, BUT for fucks sake there are better DJs out there. Yes he spins ina different style than other DJs do, but all the skill Ive seen him display doesnt quite match up to say Miguel Miggs even though they have different styles. OK heres an example: compare Sasha with some other respected DJ like Jon the Dentist. Now theyre both really damn good DJs, but even though their styles vary quite a bit, in the end Sasha is the better DJ. Martin when it comes down to it, yeah youre a far better mixer than I am and u know more about every genre of electronic music other than house than I do, but I know more about house than you do.

Another thing, whats with the comment about me getting my opinions from other people...?! Jesus Christ Martin, where the fuck did that come from?! and Mixmag??? What the fuck have i done for u to insult me like this? Why the fuck do u think that what I said is someone else's opinion?

I agree its hard to pinpoint the best DJ out there, thats why I didnt say there is one, i just said my favorites Dj Dan. But u dont have to be a fucking house guru to tell when someones a better DJ than someone else. Fuck this, Im going to bed. Lets continue this conversation in real life.

k-pryde .. well said

Im a big fan of Morillo because of his creativity. I've heard a lot of DJ sets from other house DJ's such as DJ Dan, and yeah he plays some good stuff.
But at summer love when I heard Erick sample Kurt Cobains lyrics from Lithium... that was insane. Very original. That's when he pulled out ahead of the other DJ's to become my favorite.

I havent had the chance yet to see too many other big house DJ'z live, but put them up against Erick and I know he wouldn't dissapoint.

Yah, he was voted best of 2001, and he was up for the award in 2002 as well. He also mixed the ministry of sound guide to breaks.

He toured new york and europe for a few months in the summer. Someone should bring him here...

although the time i saw erick morillo was a big disapointment i'll have to say after hearing a set like his performance at the leeds love parade 2000, i have never ending respect for the guy.

definetly the best live mix from him i have.
