You are obvioulsy thinking that if you play what everyone wants to hear and be a "superstar dj" all those chicks who used to laff at yer dumbass in highschool might actually talk to you. Seriously if you love the music, the scene and have your own style, you will make connections, you will develop a following of people that know you are real and.........you will get gigs...that is it, that is all.. |

Heh, getting bookings in Vancouver isn't easy. For trance, if you want to spin at parties you need to know people, straight up. Once you know those people, you have to pester them more than the usual suspects are willing to pester them. Continue doing that and who knows, good things might happen for you.
If a trance/prog DJ wanted to get booked at my night, what they'd have to do is show up there on a somewhat regular basis to support the night and make their presence known. Since it's the only real trance night in the city (of the genre, that I'm aware of anyways), if they were really into the music there's no reason they wouldn't enjoy partying to it when our other residents are playing. They'd also have to give me a really good, cleanly mixed CD with at least some hint of new tracks and originality. I understand how difficult it is to get booked in this city so as a result of that I'll book anyone that impresses me. I'm sure there are at least some other promoters in the city that will do the same. |

i have to agree with what adam and sean said.
if you want to get booked you HAVE to know people. and you have to pester. :silly: and you have to be able to impress. we all get something different out of DJing. i personally am extatic when i get booked out because i get to share my love for my music. the way i look at it is frighten or enlighten. i think ive frightened people a couple of times, but its all good :) anywho, i LOVE trance and prog, and (i hope) people appreciate my love for my music, and develop their own appreciation for it. then again, if all you want to do is play out to support the habit of over spending on vinyl, be a top 40 DJ. and dialate, spinning for 2 years doesnt nescisarly make you a beginner. i decided i wanted to DJ about a year and bit ago. yes, i am new, yes, i have alot to learn, but ive had many experiences, both good and bad, that some who have been spinning for 5 years havent had the oppertunity to have. :) |

I like this thread. Don't think the guy was asking to be flamed though, it's a question i've often wondered myself. You find the venues you play shape your sound anyways, not to mention your own DJ buddies and what they're always raving about. The somewhat questionable (underground, if you will) state of the 'scene' in Vancouver makes it difficult, i think, for new talent to be found and acclaimed (also because everyone and their stepsister plays records nowadays) - the best way is to find the people who enjoy and/or promote something close to 'your sound' and befriend, by way of spamming them with your music.. heh.
i get discouraged, myself at times.. sometimes i think there's only about five people in this city who would appreciate my record box. keep at it! :) |

i dont know if this has been said or not, but i think a good way to get noticed (mixing wise), is to listen to how other successful people are mixing in there sets, and try try try to make ur mixing style better and improve on what is already being done in the scene, and stay very current on track selection, try and find new tracks u know well devestate the dance floor before other dj's start overplaying it...im no expert but this seems like a good place to start after making social connections with people...it doesen't matter what style you play ... breaks and jungle, drum&base, house, and trance are all popular in there own respect, and alot of music lovers, love all of the genres... although there isn't enough hard house/nu nrg around town, or am i wrong? more nu nrg dj's would be dope!!

so thump, why'd you even ask the question, when you already knew the answer? (play what you love)
If you just want to be another lame ass dj in the herd, then go to clubs regularily, listen to what sorta stuff the DJs play there, and buy that kind of music. If you actually want to be GOOD... you know the answer to your own question. |
