Best Genre To Spin In Van.....
What's the best genre to spin in Van to get gigs?
Say you don't really know any promoters, are too busy to put on your own nights, have a decent collection of vinyl, a hot as shit demo mix, and some of your own produced tracks. So what genre is the best to spin? Please no replies about "Play what u love" cause I love most types of dance music except Uk/US garage. Oh and hip hop is a bit out of the question. I like it but I can't scratch worth a damm. |

to tell you the truth i don't think you really matters what you play if you wanna get booked..as with everything in life, to be succesfull you'll have to really persistant and agressive when you seek bookings. try tech house tho..theres alot of house nights in van, and there is also quitea sizable fan base for it aswell. |

Ok.. Thump666 there is only one answer.. top 40 hip-hop.. Vancouver has been a r&b, hip-hop town since my parents were growing up.. it is the most popular and it packs clubs like Atlantis.. but you should spin what YOU love if your a true DJ, not just what others like.. then again a Dj's job is to get the place grooving..

This is gonna sound harsh......
What the fukk kinda question is that???(Besides the most retarded one i've heard in awhile) Quote:
How about you spin the music you like? Who the fukk cares what everyone else wants to hear, cus if you are just playin for them you're never gonna be creative and your gonna sound like every other fukkin dj, which means you won't get booked, no matter what you are playing. Sorry if that was harsh, but sometimes only a smakk in the head wakes ya up.:) |

as a beginner at this point, no genre that you choose is gonna make it any easier to get bookings. every scene is saturated with DJs. not to say you'll never get a chance to play out but certainly don't expect any kind of regular play, as mentioned above many of van's longest running & most talented djs are hard up for gigs these days.
the only way one can stand out from the pack is to break free from genre boundries and create their own style, so if you really love all kinds of music i'd say try to bring as many different flavors into the mix as possible, without losing continuity. then you'd be on the right track :smoke1: that, or play breaks, everybody loves breaks :PartEkid: |

to be honest (and snobby, and whatever else) burn some cd's if you want to get booked. get popular music, or house, or whatever crap the masses feel like grinding to this week and go to town.
if you want to collect records, then here's the answer you specifically told us not to give: buy what you love. the majority of my collection is folk, soul, and rock from the 50's through the 70's. can i mix most of it? no. if i could, would people in clubs want to hear it? no. such is life... records aren't for everyone, they're for me. |

^yeah, if that appeals to you... basically i'm telling you to just play what you feel, because what genre you choose doesn't mean shit when it comes to getting bookings.
i know it's not the answer you're looking for, but it's the only right answer imo... |

but other than that it doesnt matter how long you've been spinning, just put out your material online, give out cds or tapes... talk is talk we need to hear your product. having knowledge about many other genres definetly helps since adding flavours of say trance and house into hip hop for example could cook up some interesting sounds. whatever genre you chose to spin theres always going to be competition... not only are there thousands of djs in vancouver never getting real gigs, there are genres like techno and hardcore which have really small followings.... it helps to meet people in the scene but overall, your sound and skills are what will bring you up. among the sub scenes here in vancouver.... i noticed MANY people have been taking up spinning breaks... but i think techno can make a huge comeback to the rave dancefloors once more people step up and spin that stuff right! the techno scene is pretty small here but damn i think once someone who can do it right comes into the spotlight, the entire scene is going to change but it all comes down to this.... the dj who knows their tracks more than the average person, knows their musical styles and basics and puts in that extra effort to have their own distinctive sound is more likely to suceed.... |

i'd say the top 5 genres of club/rave music, in vancouver based on event turnout would be:
1. Top 40 2. Hip Hop 3. House 4. Trance / Prog 5. Breaks / DnB i think we'll see 3 and 5 switch places over the next few years, as breaks & jungle fans reach club age and house moves back to the underground... but other than that i say it pretty much stays the same... if anything the Top 40 & Urban will get bigger, while the more progressive genres move to the fringe. not the most optomistic outlook, i know, but it's realistic. And it souldn't affect your choice of genre because, regardless of the popularity of each genre, the amount of available bookings is proportionate to the size of the crowds [*ed: and hence the number of bedroom dj's trying to get booked]... so your chances are pretty much the same whichever way you go. people can tell if your passion for music is secondary to your desire to 'rock the party'. That passion needs to be first and foremost in order to succeed as a dj. It's the only way you'll make a lasting impression on a crowd. Last edited by Wood; May 28, 03 at 05:59 PM. |
