Paul van Dyk - Return of god (Mixmag CD)

01 Aquaculture - Understatement
Paul gets the mix rolling in a cool, understated way. From here it'll build and build. This aptly named downbeat tune rolls around a teasing, off-centre bassline.

02 Starchaser - Falling Star (The Awakening Mix)
Italian outfit Starchaser were responsible for the fantastic 'Dark Suite Piano,' one of PvD's 2002 faves. 'Falling Star' is another corker – deep, techy and with a trolley load of subtle changes.

03 Cultivate - Broken Pieces
Hooj's trancey cousin Lost Language come up trumps, as the adrenaline starts rising. Louk out for 'Lost Language. Exhibition,' available now through hooj.com

04 Mal Black - Funk System
Who says robot voices are finished? This bass-drenched slammer has a jacking vocoder sample blurting 'Funk System' so often, you'll start climbing the dripping walls.

05 Wellenrausch - On The Run
Wellenrausch roughly translates as 'high on a wave'. They come from Germany, and this tune rocks out in a banging Chicane style.

06 Subsunday - So Good
'So Good' is Paul's idea of the ideal pure trance tune. Positive, energetic and thumping; tacklepower!

07 Magenta - Twisted Soul
Set to be massive at the 2003 Berlin Love Parade, Mageta take a tiny, delicate melody then swell it into fat anthemic chords. Look out for Paul's tougher mix of 'Twisted Soul'. It could be a belter.

08 Fiocco - Afflitto 2003
Banging industrio Belgian label Nitrox first released 'Affilito' in 1997, and this year they've brought out a double pack of cool remixes. Fiocco sounds Italian but is actually local Belgian producer Jan Vervloet.

09 Ronski Speed - Iris
Paul first heard 'Iris' as a demo three years ago and wanted to sign it to Vandit, but Warners got there first.

10 Nu-NRG - Conective
Italian nutters NU NRG are signed to Vandit. 'Connective' is an exclusive preview for this Mixmag CD, taken from NU NRG's forthcoming artist LP (due in 2004).

11 David Forbes - Answers
'Answers' is more driving than Forbes' 2001 Ibiza anthem 'Questions'. A very cool record.

12 Mesh - Purple Haze
Always trustworthy, Paul's taken the drum loop from 'No More Rain' and run it under 'Purple Haze'.

13 Malte & Marc de Clarq - No More Rain (Shane 54 Refill)
Paul finishes the mix with storming Berlin anthem 'No More Rain'. The original mix was huge in van Dyk's home city after last summer's festival ('Sommersafari') was plagued with torrential downpours. M&M delivered sunshine on a rainy day.

"Free with the August 2003 issue of
Mixmag. Not to be sold separately.
All you Dyk fantasies fulfilled."

The Quotes

Always up for a laugh, the Mixmag crew persuaded Paul to read out a few words at the beginning and end of the CD:

"Hi this is Paul I've taken some time out from working on my new album to make you this mix I tried to make a collection that brings you right into the mood to go to the festival ... of the summer and have a good time."

"Hello Mixmag readers. They wanted me to say something on this CD. I don't want to say something on this CD because I made music for this CD, so have a listen. (laughs) Is that better? (laughs) OK."

Fucking great CD, a good reflection of today's Paul van Dyk sets, starts off with a few nice house tunes then picks up half way through the CD, my fav tunes are: brand new Ronski Speed - Iris, following that Nu-NRG - Connective, which is an upcoming single getting great reviews recently, David Forbes - Answers, Mesh - Purple Haze (PvD's own edit version). Awesome album to listen to before going out clubbing, full of house flavor and uplifting trance!

Awesome mix indeed.

I'm not a big fan of Ronski Speed - Iris though. It's solidly produced in Ronski Speed fashion with his signature awesome sound, but the melody is a little hurting. I think he should stick to remix duty.
