yah i agree with what you said.
people get jungle (old drum n bass) confused with a particular drum n bass sound all the time.

bounty killer - Dead This Time (Jungle Payback)
or old jump-up like
Dj hype & Dj zinc - play the game
congo natty stuff... etc etc etc
u dont have tracks like that today in the DNB world... There are nuskool jump-up productions out today that play along the lines of oldskool basslines wobbly basslines..but the ragga elements are gone, breaks are organized differently, the production is different...DNB today has more layers then some of the simpler productions of the past...the foundation layed by jungle has been taken and evolved into something else...

Music that people would think is jungle is not as popular , and is called mutant dancehall or nuskool ragga stuff like Krinjah, but u wouldn't be hearing that at a regular party.....so dnb is just evolved jungle...so basically they are the same thing

im no expert though, so someone can correct me if they want....

that is true, but it's not like nobody's making jungle anymore. jungle these days is considered dnb with a more tribal sound. (i.e. congas in the background or something like that), and it very often includes rapping (not always, but often) of some sort. basically it's the same thing, but the sound is a tad different.

no1d's got it right... what used to be called jungle has evolved into what is now called dnb, while the renaissance of ragga & hardcore sounds has now split off into a sub-genre of it's own, aka ragga jungle or mash-up jungle. DJ Angst is the first local who comes to mind who's seriously pushing the nu ragga sounds, Manos One is well into it also.

I don't agree that the ragga and hardcore elements are completely gone from new drumnbass though, artists like Digital, Zinc, Total Science, Baron, Calibre, Roni & crew are all constantly paying homage to the oldskool, while still writing tracks that are on the absolute cutting edge of music imo. I think a lot of newer, younger dnb artists just don't have that connection to jamaincan music, as most of them came into the scene when dnb was in it's first 'dark' phase. So a lot of the new tech funk stuff really has completely broken free of it's jungle roots. It's good to hear the breakbeats coming back into a lot of today's dark & futuristic bizness though, for a while there everything was sounding far too techno for my taste.

Yes i totally agree... i guess what i meant to say was that their isn't really much Ragga vocals in tracks these days like in the oldskool days...but i agree with what u said about baron, total science's etc etc productions ..thats what i meant when saying that the some of the nuskool stuff has elements of oldskool basslines etc etc... But your right, i dont have as much of a connection with those jamaican elements, cuz i started listening to dnb in and around 97 or 98, so my tastes are completely different...but i still enjoy those sounds alot....btw You were spinning at partys in Victoria when my older sister was going to partys , i saw ur name on some old old flyers :)

As someone who actually enjoys and spins the most extreme unlistenable, elements of breakbeat out there - hardcore electronix/ breakcore, et all, - i'd say that within the breakcore & "mutant dancehall" soundz, breakcore is the more recent bastard son of original jungle, while mutant dancehall - which is another side to ' breakcore- is more straight up dancehall and dub experiments. The influences might be there, but i hear more industrial, noize, and dub soundclash than 'jungle". You'll often hear 4/4 beats there, and dancehall riddims, rather than breaks. Its just another way to fuck dub/reggae/dancehall up - and more often than not - has nothing to do with dnb whatsoever. It's more mashing reggae at its core. It goes great in the mix. And there are sonic terrorists that are clashing gabber with dancehall - love it! If you're at all into dancehall, it rocks the spot. Heavy shit!

If i can say this, YOU CAN HEAR THIS SHIT ON YOUR LOCAL FM AIRWAVES! Check my sig. A handful of local headz rep are repping these sounds. ITs not some 'foreign underground music that you'll never hear in Vancouver" There are local NW heads and collectives doing it too.

I do a show called THE FEAR @ CiTR 101.9 FM, and if you haven't heard, YOU CAN HEAR HARDCORE ELECTRONIX ON YOUR RADIO.

Nuff said.

Check out www.hardmusic.ca for a local perspective on hard electronix,

www.hardcoretechno.ca

NOISE LIBERATION ARMY online radio, and one of the only active hardcore collectives doing a label in the NW. Great peeps!

^download some Andy C sets... usually does the business.. Ed Rush, Hive, Tech Itch, Dylan, Bailey, Friction would all be good bets for darker shit too

there's lots of good sets on drumnbass arena (www.breakbeat.co.uk) and www.bassdrive.com has 24 hr streaming live dnb radio. go to www.nwdnb.bc.ca and check the downloads section, for some local bizness.

the new dark stuff lately is pretty fuckin heavy

capone - tudor rose (shimon remix) ---- whoa damn sick is all i gotta say about this one
fresh and adam f - original jungle sound --- hard-core!
delerium - silence (j majik remix) - best bassline... dddang
futurebound - blind cobblers
rascal and klone - witchcraft ----- dark trancey track really dope

lotta dope stuff out there if you're a fan of the hard n dark dnb styles. andy c n the ram side of things are definetly getting harder n darker.... like the map by ram trilogy.... and their frequencey offshoot label with kryptic minds - the truth (hoooly fuck this one is intense =p)

concord dawn has also done some serious shit... the new remix thats almost out of dkay - be there 4 u is just KILLA.....

if you're down with the less dark crazy evil stuff check out dj marky and even zinc. even though they drop the big dark tunes they also drop some amazing shit.
