2004's which genre ready to make it big
Come on people, looking over the past 3-4 years, even the past year things have really really changed in this city....
- Weekend club nights catering to electronic music - Less raves - Only one dedicated drum n bass nights - "Sexy house" on the decline - Trance coming back? - A few techno show going off - Tonnes of new locals on the rise - Less people supporting locals - No more commerical radio play for local electronica - A big shift in who are doing the clubnights - Breaks scene seems to be growing - 4am openings what do you think some of the biggest new trends will be? I'm hoping house makes a huge comeback...to the clubs, to the parties..everywhere...instead of trance headliners, I'd like to see someone like felix or pete tong headline a massive and have everyone dancing.. (nice start with kiss 2004, love to see what dmitry is going to have all the kids saying)
Vancouver has to kind of get caught up with the rest of the world. Trance headlining every massive has nothing to do with it being #1, do people honestly always attend those things just for the music? :P I also hope there's death to electroclash and all the pretentiousness that ensues. i'm always hoping for some more techno, I haven't seen a great show since Richie Hawtin came to the commadore a few years ago. *there's been good shows since then, i just haven't gone Dnb wise, it's seen a steady decline for the last few years which is pretty unexplainable. I'm hoping there will definitely be some great talent brought in 2004, because I'm going to scream if John B comes one more time :P. I don't think this city has its love for great dnb in all the right places (for example, teebee came a few years ago and nobody really showed up, fuck you guys!)....unless someone tries something completely new and amazing, I don't anticipate things turning around, but that doesn't mean people won't still have a great time with automatic at the lotus and clash parties. AS for Techno, Mauro Picotto & Marco Carola , Juan Atkins, John Kelley, Akufen, Tactical Techno showcase 1-3 were some major events this year not to mention the series of techno shows Derrick Wilson has started (although they only focus on hard techno)
well... the only thing that I really see is that want more then just to here some name dj who they can download... people need to be re-introduced to some sort of experience but there seems to be an overall lack of enthusiasm, support and positivity from the "community" |

But trance is where it is at. Then progressive house and psytrance. |

I think as a whole, there's just not as much passion in this community for music like there is elsewhere. I would say it's certainly refreshing to meet people who are so in love with music..and it's definitely great to see promoters taking risks to bring in names that people may not be entirely familiar with because they enjoy their stuff and know that an unknowing crowd will be turned onto something new. This city is not supportive and excited enough about new things that it's so incredibly hard for people to try anything new...but I hope that turns around. |

how about fucking MUSIC. genres are killing music, if DJs and clubbers weren't so caught up in their separate little scenes, dance music wouldn't be in the dire straits that it is right now
this whole movement needs to grow up, get over it's ego issues and start bringing people TOGETHER with sounds, instead of pushing them apart. i mean obviously different people have different tastes, but DJs need to view that as a challenge, instead of just staying safely within the boundries of your chosen scene and everyone else be damned. then we'll start seeing successful clubnights & parties that don't rely on expensive & over rated OOT talent. that, and kill all the electroklash. anybody read this weeks westender? hehe 'haircuts' lol |

Totally agree mr woody, the past two years have seen music stick its head up its own ass. People forgetting the roots of it all and forgetting that its all about having fun with people you are friends with and being introduced to something you might not otherwise know. most nights have really tightened up the formats, some are still wide open... either way the attitude that comes along with say, people that follow progressive house like religion is very detrimental because its like a cult now... ironically most of those dj's could care less and love playing eclectic or big anthem sets... same goes for tech-house and probably with dnb, Breaks have gone in a darker direction or late and most people have a big misconception that techno is only blazing hard headbanger music. |

It is hard to convince people to open their minds and ears to new types of sounds.
My taste in music spans the spectrum but it is hard to get people that like trance to listen to DnB, people that like hip hop to listen to progressive house, etc. It is also unfortunate that people will only go to shows where the big name pulls in the ticket sales as it is the new up and coming artists that are making the best music right now. |

I don't think my example were that extreme.
A club like Sonar on Wednesday plays hip hop and on Friday caters to techno, some of my friends will stay all night Wednesday but don't care to do so on Friday since the 'music doesn't inspire them'. lol.. like listening to the Milkshake song is inspiring. But you are right as being a DJ you do have the chance to expose the masses to new types of music. |

no your right, they aren't that extreme.... i could have worded that differently...
i meant just that those wouldn't be the most likely genres to cross over, like i could see there being more potential for crossover between breaks/hiphop/jungle/dancehall or techno/trance/prog/breaks .... hmmm seems like breaks is the most unifying genre of the lot... maybe that's why it's gaining so much popularity lately ultimately i guess no one dj's selection is gonna please everybody... but breaking these sub-genres up so rigidly isn't helping things either |
|
|||
yeah, i would've said the same thing.... only there's absolutely TONS of trancy, progressive dnb and, with the possible exception of dieselboy, it has never come close to crossing over to the trance audience, as far as i know ??? j. majik? sonic? john b? concord dawn? illskillz? |
