so I made a song ...
this a weak attempt at a dark trance track. I tried to make a trance song with a bit of social consciouness , so there's a messege behind it.
I'm really new to music making, although I've been playing piano for about 10 years , I only just begun hooking it up to my computer to try and compose dance tunes. hope you enjoy. ftp://djdemo:[email protected] right click "save as" to download |

it's all good mang, I just posted it for criticism. Love or hate , it's all good.
A mix of programs, to record all the sounds/base/whatnot I used Garageband hooked up to USB midi keyboard. To put it together a mix of reason/and soundtrack. |

Put a slight chorus to your bass lines (4-5ms) sounds like your having a lil bit of phasing issues every few bars with your bass n kick drum. One needs to be scouped, id recomend scouping out some bass out of your bass line. A strong kick is always required in these kind of songs, and I'm sure you don't want to compremise that. For a good bass EQ, Id say around 40-160HZ @ -3db lower. That should help tweak your drum and bass tracks. Good start tho. better than my first few tracks. Keep it up. If you need any more help, post some more questions. I'll see if I can help you out.

Oh, thats what I also forgot to say, stay away from outboard/external gear. You can do it all digitally with in the Multi track engine. (ie: Logic or Cubase EQ's and mastering tools are good enough and can never be altered by an out side source unless you say, DO IT DO IT)
The problem which I have with some outboard gear, especially for production, is that it is great to utilize when brining a sound in (ie using mic pre's such as the focusrite red 7) with only required EQ, but as far as mixing it; once you have it all sequenced, hmmmm, well what if you leave the track for a lil while and some on comes and bumps your mixer, or if someone uses it, puts all of the pots back to zero, damn, all of your settings are gone. Even with primo board documentation you won't get the same sound back. At least from my experience. I might be coming off as a little bit too technical and picky, but when it comes to production, I'm a very big stickler for getting my mixes to sound cleaner than a can of lysol. :) |
