I find the breaks getting released on streetwise have recently been fabulous. I love ie:Nectarios - Phoenix as well as the obvious Emit - Collect (pilgrim remix) Most breaks have been bottlegs and I am not a fan, I truly believe a bootleg is a true testament to the lack of originality at the moment. I still have faith though and feel that things will progress, but maybe just at a slower rate. Just like PVD's "vandit formula" (same kick snare pattern since 1997's For an Angel) I can recognize a Plump's track, or a Meat Katie or an Icey from a mile away. there are phenomenal breaks out there they are just not as plentiful as when nu skool emerged. There are many prog tracks with sick breaks on the b-sides that people pass up but when I play them sure enough I have three or four trainspotting break freaks lurking. It is all about searching for gems. Come see me at Boomtown on a sat, maybe I have a few suggestions for you. Last edited by Mirka Cerny; May 26, 04 at 12:06 AM. |

Pvd has an original sound. I like the drum loops he uses. That loop was amazing for "for an angel" I like that I will always know when its a pvd, quake, york, corsten, tiesto track. its that distinctive sound. it wets my pants. |

^ wow, dated comment and a half - I can't remember the last time I saw someone with a Walkman - but I'm sure it was a while ago... most of these kids probably don't even know what a walkman is...
Of course, lets just say I listening to my cassette tape in my 'Walkman' (yes I know you don't care but I'm gonna tell you anyway!)... Gabber all the way man... everything else sucks, everything!! |

breakbeat is really popular right now. Does that mean it's all good? not neccessarily... but it does mean a lot of people are feelin it. Personally i feel like breaks are pulling a bit more weight than most other dance music right now, i think there's more variety within the genre than, say, dnb or trance.
i feel what AWOL's sayin though, i'm kind of at the same place with dnb. i say just play what you feel, old or new or whatever. lately i've gone back to playing a lot of golden-era hip hop and dancehall, which i consider a big step forward, despite the fact that it's much older music. i wouldn't consider speed garage a step backwards, obviously there's people who want to hear it, and you're feeling it, so what's the problem? i think it's kind of a silly notion that you have to be playing brand new music in order to be progressing.... |

' I love them to pieces but most of the set funky breaks have an old sound about them. the old disco loops and the "hey isn't that the plump djs?" are always good to make your back bone slide. But I understand where you're coming from rob. theres a ton of funky beats that have come out in the last two years you just have to dig for them..;) and if changing your tastes is going to make you want to dig for other gems than just giver bro. but there is a shit load of new funky and darkstep sounds that are out and about. ~don't forget it! |

I think mainly I just don't really like Newschool or Florida and there's not much else being made out there except for somekinda funky proggy breaks. Last edited by AWOL; May 26, 04 at 06:16 AM. |
