how do you stucture your sets??

i like to start my sets off with a real stormer to get people into things right off the start, and i always peak time my set at the very end, i save 4 or 5 of my hardest sickest tracks for it, that way you go out on top leaving a good impression on the crowd.I also like throwing in a rediculously long break mid set :) as a little rest before the high end shit gets dropped.Course it will be different depending on genre but i spin hard techno so this seems to work nicley.

For me a whold bunch of things contribute to this.
- I typically never program a set and more so freestyle the entire thing. Sure I will have mixes I know work really well together, but overall, I won't have a set of say 12-20 tracks in mind. It allows more flexibility.
- What time am I playing at? -- Opening, middle of the night, closing, etc... - Are the people in the room tired or are they still hella pumped to party.
- What style of party is it at? A massive, club, house party, etc...
- Who am I playing after? What did they end with? - Style, speed, etc.
- You can typically read the energy off a room fairly easily, so keep in mind what you want to play, mixed with what you are getting a reaction from.

These are things I typically look at when detmining the structure of my set and ultimately what I am going to play.

Well, I always try and start my set off with something people haven't heard before, or something that grabs everyone's attention because they don't know what it is.

My fave thing to start with is usually at the very beginning of a long break in a track. This way people aren't quite sure of the style of music that's gonna be played. And yes, it has to be a solid track! So it keeps their attention.

then from there, it can go anywhere, as long as I end my set with anthem sounding tunes. People tend to judge sets ont he last few tracks that are played, so if you can find those tracks to end with that'll really have people bumpin', they'll remember those tracks as "Your sound"!

but seriously, i play how i feel at that moment and i just think about 2 or 3 mixes ahead. I never plan anything out.

It really depends on the crowd.


The rave crowd really sucks to play for if you want to take them through your set. They depend on sick tracks so you playing a set without those banging sick tracks can empty the floor at times. that leaves me to do what akeel said basically go 1 track at a time. With people walking in and out of the room, socializing, trading candy, sometimes you just have to pick a few and play for them. Anyone will dance to benny bennasi but only a chosen few will dance to squarepusher its finding something in the middle to play that will make everyone happy and get a few dancing

call me a sellout but when theres hot chicks ready to dance i enjoy throwing down something with soul or vocals and that keeps the girl to guy ratio A-ok for the rest of my set.

I play a lot of genres.

I will start with something downtempo. Usually some melodic trance like lustral - everytime.

Then i'll slowly build into some darker trance, then it'll just go crazy hard pumping trance where there is no melody just straight up bass (tech trance if you will) then i'll go back to more ambience and slowly start going into uplifting, then just play straight up uplifting trance.

imo:I can put you in hell and then send you into heaven! :)

as for acid techno.. Ideally i'd love to have the crowd wanting more after walking off the stage.

i simply want to listen to my records on a phat system.

if the crowd leaves.. sure it'll be a bummer. But when my records are on a nice system, i just want to hear what they sound like.

Besides. most of the people dancing wont know *good* trance.
