See that's all good. IT's really about knowing your music and what goes well together but at the same time it's a DJ's job to please the crowd in front of them even if it means playing that track that you don't really like but you know will get the crowd pumped. Please the audience and you'll be asked back...please yourself and you can spin at home.

I make mental notes at parties when people go nuts to a specific song, I write it down and add it to the vinyl compilation.

Every time i plan out a set, i normally change my mind by the time i get to the venue or walk around the venue, or make it on stage or even touch the decks.. Although i do like to keep my records in doubles or triples, normally stuff that just mixes incredibly well together, and i just work off that.

I disagree about playing what the audience wants to hear, if you i wasn't true to a record i wouldn't play it. I just see a big diffrence in gaining popularity and gaining respect. And with that i see a big diffrence in people who play top 40 shit of techno, or coming out to see what you do because you have your own established sound.

Hmm... Interesting to hear that some people spin stuff they've never listened to before. I can't imagine even trying that, at least if I was spinning at a party and wanted to build a reputation.

I'd guess it'd be a great way to practice though.

My own technique is to plan a few "major" tracks, see what the crowd likes, and fill in the gaps on the fly.

No doubt. Very few DJs are talented enough to bend the mind of the crowd they are playing for enough to make them like what the DJ wants to play. Too many DJs think they can do this and end up playing awesome music for a crowd that isnt in the mood for that (an intense climactic buildup of DnB for example, when the crowd is still looking for something slower like house, breaks, or more mellow atmospheric DnB)

All too often, DJs come up with a wicked set in the bedroom that is wasted on a crowd that isnt sharing the same headspace as the DJ. Under different circumstances the crowd may have totally grooved to the set, the DJ was just out of sync with the crowd.

Reading the crowd as you play is way more important IMO than picking out a really good collage of tracks to play one after another. On a recording however, the track order takes precedence, because you cant read the listener at all through a recording.

many of these different scenes request djs that are genre specific..

many promoters think this way.

"hey we need a funk dj........." "lets book flave"

if your hired by the club to cater to the patrons who attend the night/club you have a very difficult job to keep everyone happy.

mainstream club/ rnb hip hop djs have to pay far more attention to this kind of gig.

Some djs get pissed with people hangin behind them when they play.

... try dealing with a countless # of girls, boys, bimbos, hoes, gangstars, country bumpkins, skids and the odd raver. all of them wanting you to play their track asap....

God help you if you don't have it.

you have no time to plan a set list but once you start playing the same crowd again and again you get to know what they like and how they repond to certain tracks or tracklists. :)
