i play stuff i havent listened to before sometimes - its fun. also i never plan sets out at all.
i had a talk with czech about this once on how we both know some female dj's that plan out every set they play. According to him its because their smarter and men are too lazy to plan anything out :P |

i usually just put my new records in the front of my crate.. and as i go through i'll pick random records, and when i stumble apon something that sounds really good together, i'll take the record im mixing in, and move it behind the other record in my crate.. and just keep doing this.. so eventually my crate is organized with records that work well together.. so all records that are withen a 10 record radius will work good together.. i dont really plan anything.. but this way i dont have to dig into the way back of my crate to find something that works well with something at the beginning of my crate.. its all organized with styles of DNB throughout as well.. so its easier and faster for me to grab a random record from a certain section of my crate.. if that makes sense at all... helps me create a good flow through styles without actually planning my set.

every hard house dj uses the ppcock technique. |

With how picky people that come to parties/clubs are these days, I think it is tough to actually plan out an entire set, end to end. It's all about having a balance of reading the crowd/room you are playing for and also playing what you want to play.
I mean yeah, you will have mixes that you know go really well together and bust those out, but as for planning an entire set end to end, why bother unless you are recording live or something? |

ive got little strings of 2 or 3 records that really go together well, i mean everyone does. Beyond that i dont really plan out a set, I get a rough idea of what i want to play based on the crowd and what time im playing and stuff, but i would never sit down and practice a set before i play it.

You see this is the problem with so many Dj's out there. If you can't read a crowd and change up on the fly then what kind of a Dj are you. Hows about you give me a mix disc you did at home last night and I'll play that. No real Dj can honestly say that planning out your set in advance can really work. Watch and read the people.

I write down every single thing about a track and stage it out depending on genre, put the records side by side depending on bpm/genre
I have a big graph, it's really cheezy. I even used a ruler. :\ all sets are planned a long time in advance. |

Considering that most people hate with a passion what Doom spins (and those that do like it don't really care about how they hear it), he rarely plans his sets. In fact the few times he has planned sets out they have been awful.. And Dooms means -awful- even for noise/breakcore.

but I enjoy studying each track individualy, dont get me wrong, I can do it in my head, but it's more like a self-reference then anything. |
