Cubase sx 2.0 rundown
Anyone out there really pro with cubase? I just need somebody to give me a rundown of this program, and tell me all the basic functions of it and shit. I just need someone to explain how you load the vst instruments, how you program notes (I'm coming from FL studio) .. how you formulate a playlist to bring the beat together .. the basic functionality of the mixer and stuff. You know, I just need to get started here so I can figure the rest out for myself. I'll be tryin to figure it all out in the meantime with the help section.

I think it's good karma to help people!
This is my mainstay program, so any other questions just ask... OK so have you figured out how to create a new project? File --> New Project... then it will ask you to pick a folder. I recommend you use a different folder for each song file, otherwise all your midi and audio files will get mixed up. I have a huge folder for all my song folders as well. So this is what my selection looks like when it asks me to choose.. D:\Songs\ and then I name a new folder. The new project will open up. Choose your tempo by selecting from the drop-down menu, Project--> Tempo Track, and set the tempo in the little window to be whatever BPM you want. Now, to answer three of your questions: (how you program notes.. how you load the vst instruments:) you need to start out by creating tracks in the project. Choose from the third drop-down menu option (I think it's Project, I'm not in front of the comp now) and select Add - Audio track, or Midi track, whichever one you want. Let's say you're adding a Midi track, since you want to program notes. Once you've added a midi track, it will appear in your project window. Now you want to make it go to a VST instrument, right? First you have to pick one. To do that, hit F11 and a little box full of blank lines will come up. Click on one of the blank lines and it will allow you to select a VST instrument that you have installed. Let's say it's Absynth. So, select Absynth. Then go back into the project window and click on your midi track. On the left hand side, you will see a box which tells you where the inputs and outputs are routed. So, you want to connect the output of this midi track to Absynth. Click on the blank line by output and select Absynth. Then select the pencil tool and draw in a MIDI part right on the track, one bar long. (i'm assuming you don't have a MIDI keyboard, btw). Double click on the part you have just created and a MIDI editing window will open up, you can draw in your notes there. There you go! So just keep creating MIDI and audio tracks and all you have to do to "formulate a playlist" I think what you mean is sequence the track.. is lay out chunks of MIDI and audio in the tracks you have created. The project window itself is your timeline, and by default you can view it in bars and beats. To look at the mixer, press F3 and it will come up, by default you will view all the tracks, audio, MIDI in and the audio out of the MIDI, you can click on the pictures on the left hand side to take away certain types of tracks. I think this should get you started. Once you get going give me a holler and I'll throw you a few fun tricks as well. |
