I asked because I use a lot of effects (I have a reverb or delay on almost everything) and if I could get a dsp card for pro tools and use the digidesign effects that would take a shitload off my CPU usage as opposed to running a bunch of different vst effects that put a lot of unnecessary stress on my CPU...

UAD-1's and a DSP soundcard will solve many VST and Plug-in effects problems while still retaining your current computer system. Plus Ram is so cheap that everyone should have at least a Gig for a DAW.
I've used Cubase SX since it's first release, and I love it. It's a great inexpensive sequencer. That said, I'm a week or so away from a Digidesign 002 to round out my home system. Having both Cubase/Protools, Logic/Protools, Nuendo/Protools, and you'll get the best of both worlds. Get both! |

Try this - "Borrow" a copy of Cubase and try it for a month, then rent a protools system for a month and try that.
The problem many people have when they start using Cubase is sound and operation quality; don't try and run it with a soundblaster sound card, or something similar. When comparing between the two you're going to have to get a decent audio card- At least $350+. That will get your audio quality up and keep your latency down when recording. That's the power of Protools and why it cost's more, everything is built in. It's like getting Cubase($899.00)+ Audio Card($900-1000)+ Mixer w/ Motorized Faders($1000)= $2800. Hmmm.....the Protools 002 costs $2800. You can get professional quality going in many different directions. -$899.00 for cracked Cubase software= $1900, haha. If you're going for Protools stay away from the MBox, get the 002 rack ($1500) if you need to save money I'm all for supporting software designers and over time I make sure that all my programs are legit. I believe if you really want to try something the best way is to get a crack, demo versions are just too watered down. Be sure to purchase the software if you really like it and think you're going to continue using it. |

I think i could type paragraphs about these 2 programs but bottom line, Cubase sounds a little better, but after proper mixing and mastering, Ive heard stuff from Cool Edit sound just as good if they used a wicked soundcard with dope converters. I use pro tools becuase i can get all VST plugs into it from Cubase land along with RTAS plugs and it enables me to be most creative, for me thats what its all about.
