ps - when i say i haven't met anyone capable of doing Mirka's job.... remember, she was handling the Trance, AND the Techno, AND the progressive - and doing a bang-up job on all fronts. Does anybody else here even THINK they could manage all those sections sucessfully? So far the candidates are Marty, who i wouldn't even send to buy lunch for me, and Sqila who i think really knows her trance, but admittedly isn't up on the techno. anyone else?

on deck was not buying good trance at all
Most good trance these days are bought at beatstreet as well as boomtown. But still the good banging techno (which is everywhere) is not found in vancouver shops anymore. Without going all crazy.. how can the stores correct this problem? |

The difference is, i'd start ordering the trance records right away if a good source came along. Techno i'd be hesitant to stock because it's never been a consistant seller in the past. But at least if the distribution problem were solved, i could special order stuff for the few peeps who know what they want. So, email your favorite labels & tell them to sort out better distribution for NA, Canada in particular. But... Majestic going out of business has to be somewhat indicitive of a larger trend. Maybe those sounds just aren't hittin in the major markets like they once did. I have no idea. |

its not the shops, its that NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNO hence why finding a good supplier for it is hard, and finding it at local record shops is hard.
marty, dont you get the picture or would you like me to whip open MS Paint and draw it for you? |

even when we had access to all the top techno labels, and were really trying to push the sound, it was still a hard sell. Active Pass carried lots of good techno (or so i understand) but are now the latest in a long succession of local shops to close their doors. |

How about instead of complaining about how your local record shop doesn't carry this or that, you punters go out and find a way for them to carry what you want. For example, Wood just recently linked with a new ragga distributor and now I can look through the stocklist, suggest what to order and WHAMMY ragga records are now available at Boomtown. So either suggest a viable solution or STFU about it.

Good points made Wood. I'll look into trance/techno distributors... more to come. |

Marty, if you love techno so much and want to see it prosper... why don't you start a techno night at a club somewhere and try your best to make it successful?
Put in the effort, the promotion, the money, the legwork, all of that... If you're successful and suddenly a lot of DJs start wanting to play techno and buy records under that genre, but they still don't get any in the store... THEN you can complain... Until then, nobody wants to buy records from a genre that there's no regular nights for in this city... why waste the money to buy something you'll never get to use? It's kind of like how I stopped buying bassline breaks... there's no nights in the city that showcase bassline breaks, so why am I going to spend over $20 a record on something I'll never have a chance to play out anywhere? I still love my breaks, but until a night starts that makes it worthwhile to be buying that style, I'm going to put my money into something that pays off a little better You can either do as I suggested or you can start playing something else that people actually want to hear because they're able to go out to regular nights where that style of music is playing, those are your only viable options... bitching about a situation you have no intention of changing is foolish and gets you nowhere |

why dont I start a techno night
Good question.. Cause like my techno komrades who've started nights.. failed every time. I dont know why that has anything to do with picking up more techno records.. I'll lose a shit load of money from nights and not be able to pick up records. |
