Boomtown is full of specialists who know a whole lot about what they play, I'm not going to go in and ask nicky for info about hot new dnb singles.
OH! and I like the newest addition who is usually in on sundays at boomtown, i went in the other day and he was listening to andy smith, very good taste in music. |

believe it or not, Marty, we don't actually listen to every single record that comes through in order to determine the genre. We usually rely on what info we get from our distributors (or a quick google search) to classify them. We actually have to have everything classified before it even gets to the shop. So, with 3-400 pieces arriving per week, a few mistakes are bound to happen. Deal.
Thew reason we don't have a techno/trance buyer is because a) the only person who EVER did it dilligently now lives in Alberta, b) the only reliable source for that stuff in n.america went out of business earlier this year, and c) most trance kids are playing CDs and NOBODY buys techno. on the up side, there is a new canadian distributor opening up soon who will carry more of this stuff, particularly the German imports. So we MIGHT start carrying more again... but i'll need to see a very sharp increase in demand for this stuff before i even think about bringing in another buyer. The only trance that sells right now is the really big name stuff, and i don't need help ordering that. As for the techno? that's always been a hit & miss genre, no other section of the store has left us with as large a ratio of dead stock. So I refuse to put my money on the line for a couple of fickle heads who may or may not even come in the shop every week. Maybe if i liked the music i'd put more effort into getting it going... but i don't, and i have plenty of other sections that need my attention (reggae, downtempo, rare groove) that show much more promise of doing big numbers in the future. That said, we have no plans to stop carrying these genres altogether. We will continue to bring in what we can, and will continue to keep our eyes out for a new supplier for those sections. But if things continue they way they're going lately, pretty soon trance & techno vinyl won't even be available in north american shops. |

in short, the demand is not there. Having someone like Mirka on staff made it viable because she had no problem putting in countless unpaid hours managing peoples special orders, keeping very close contact with her customers & suppliers & making sure she only ordered what was ablsolutely necessary. And even she had a hard time keeping the techno section moving (hence the crappy leftovers still on the shelf). If i knew anyone who i thought was capable of doing Mirka's job, they'd be hired in a second... but employees like that only come along once in a blue moon. pardon me for saying so Marty, but i think you'd be a pretty poor buyer. You have your head way too far up your own ass, bud. :moon: |

actually, never mind all that, i just realized what needs to be done.
i'm going to open a record store that sells nothing but techno and breakcore, and if your name isn't ppcock or torment you can't get in. it'll be so exclusive it won't even have a name!!!!! i'll be a millionaire! |

I agree with Marty that a lot of the tracks left at the moment in-stock at Boomtown for trance (I can't speak much for the techno) is crap; obsure shit, raver, just ghey, weirdo or plain old nothing really good to it trance. There's good trance and lots of not so good trance out there. The last record I bought was back in June there because there hasn't been anything else worth buying (IMO) since. Sure perhaps it's cuz Mirka is gone. But when I go browse any record store now it's the one that actually keeps up decent stock on a regular basis. Yeah I know, supply and demand - and the risk involved. But really if there were tracks that I and other trancers/techno heads want at Boomtown on a more regular basis I'm certain that there'd be more of us coming in more often. I pay $22 a record ordering by Fed EX from the UK!!! That is the only alternative I've been left with. P.S. Now with On Deck gone there should be more demand for special orders too eh. |

The only way I know of that we could get the hot product now is to order form over seas, which is NOT a viable option due to shipping costs. It's something i've researched extensively and trust me when i say the numbers DO NOT work. The only time in the past that we were capable of ordering from England & Europe was when we were running a small distribution company out of our back office, supplying about a dozen shops accross the country. So it all comes back to this - there's risks involved that i'm not willing to take right now. Mirka was an ideal buyer because she proved to me that she was capable of making those sections move, before i even put her on payroll. If somebody else came in and did what she did there's no reason to think that they wouldn't get a job out of the deal. But you'd have it a lot harder than she did, because of the lack of distribution. It's frustrating for me too, bacause i know i'm losing sales... but what to do? All i hear from the trance heads is complaints, no solutions. It's not as easy as just 'order this, order that'. order it from WHERE???? anyways, hopefully this nerw guy back east is gonna set things straight, and maybe we'll be able to start carrying more of the trance again. I'm much less aprehensive about trance than i am about techno, cause it actually has been a profitable section in the past.... but there's no point in me hiring a buyer until they have somewhere to buy from. right?
