don't songs have to be of at least our parent's generation to be oldies?
when i was a kid my favourite song in the world was "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels. now i know a there are bunch of bands doing it as a cover. "Duke of Earl" (self titled) will always be a favourite. "Respect" by Aretha Franklin i could belt out like no other 8 year old. "Loco-motion" by Little Ava i sang in my elementary schoolyard. "Big Girls Don't Cry" by The Four Seasons "Sugar Shack" by The Fireballs "It's My Party" by Leslie Gore "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens i could go on way too long... how about just some more artists... the beatles the beachboys rolling stones pink floyd the doors simon & garfunkel bob dylan joni mitchell the byrds the monkees supertramp the moody blues (i've seen in concert w/ van symphony orchestra!) the supremes the temptations bb king koko taylor stevie wonder marvin gaye james brown the jackson 5 ella fitzgerald billy holiday the ronettes the archies santana just to name a few. heh there's no doubt that my love for music was inspired by my dad's. and yah, he's old. and for those who know... "The Bristol Stomp" by The Devells "It started in Bristol at a dee jay hop They hollered and whistled Never wanted to stop We pony and twisted And we rocked with Daddy G The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol When they do the Bristol Stomp (Whoa) Really somethin when they join in jumpin (Ah-ah-ah) When they do the Bristol Stomp" |

Well.. the funny thing is, most of us can consider the songs we listened to in our earlier years oldies now.. even me. So bare with me if there are some songs that came out around 94, because in my mind, that's the year music (aside from electronica) died. Let's just hope it has it's second coming sometime soon!
Iron Maiden - Aces High Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills Richie Havens - Freedom Janis Joplin - Summertime Meat Puppets - Backwater Meat Puppets - Lake of Fire Ten Years After - Going Home Judas Priest - Painkiller The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature Metallica - Whiplash Metallica - Battery Led Zepplin - Black Dog Led Zepplin - Hot Dog Ted Nugent - Stranglehold Chris Thomas King - Hard Time Killing Floor Blues Leadbelly - In the Pines Leadbelly - Midnight Special Jimi Hendrix - Castles Made of Sand Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe any Beatles cover by Joe Cocker Rolling Stones - Sympathy For the Devil Rolling Stones - Honkey Tonk Woman Rolling Stones - Jumpin Jack Flash The Beatles - Hard Day's Night The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand The Beatles - For You Blue (Let It Be...Naked) Canned Heat - Goin Up the Country Nirvana's album "Bleach" Nirvana - Breed Nirvana - Spank Thru Nirvana - Mexican Seafood Bob Dylan - Don't Think Twice Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower Bob Dylan - The Hurricane Grateful Dead - Truckin' Grateful Dead - Casey Jones Grateful Dead - Turn On Your Lovelight Alan Parsons Project - Eye In the Sky Alan Parsons Project - Games People Play Pink Floyd - Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict Pink Floyd - Run Like Hell Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd - The Thin Ice Pink Floyd - Pigs on the Wing Pink Floyd - Sheep Pink Floyd - Young Lust CCR - Lookin Out My Back Door CCR - Born on a Bayou CCR - Fortunate Son CCR - Proud Mary CCR - Keep On Choogin' Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Ohio Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Suite Judy Blue Eyes Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Find the Cost of Freedom Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood (live) Stevie Ray Vaughn - Tin Pan Alley (aka The Roughest Place I've Ever Been) Stevie Ray Vaughn - Mary Had a Little Lamb (live) Stevie Ray Vaughn - Pride and Joy Stevie Ray Vaughn - Rude Mood Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done Neil Young - Harvest Moon Neil Young - Sugar Mountain Neil Young - My My Hey Hey (Into the Blue) Neil Young's 'Rust Never Sleeps' fuck.. there's more but I'm done. Breakfast in America is one of the greatest albums to ever be released.
I'm throwing Tom Waits, Billy Idol, The Clash, Mudhoney, Frank Zappa & The Mothers, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. White Zombie, Cream, The Honeydrippers, The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, and Elvis Costello into the mix. |
