Just take all proper pre-cautions, and be expecting the absolute worst, and yeah don't trust anyone. Try not to drink too much at parties, and make the promoter pay for your personal security and everything. Hope all goes well for you. |

LOL I wonder were ppl get their infomation? My favorite is the comment "dont go to the pyrimids". Its like ppl who are scared to goto Australia because of the deadly snakes, crocs, and sharks... yet more ppl are killed by vending machines a year than all those animals combined! Again Bri do alot of resurch on their customs, religion, manors, and laws. The more you try to blend in the less of a target you will be. Im sure you already know that muslim countrys have very strickt rules with women. Personaly when I travel I like to experince the culture as much as possible. Although I may not agree with it, I still think its important to try it out. Example when I was in Thialand I was carful to watch what I wore and made sure it was appropriate. Otherwise you get ppl staring at you and maybe even yelling and cursing at you. When my dad was traveling with his gf/friend in the middle east they had to pretend they were cousins. Because its not appropriate for a man and women to be near each other if their not related or married. One time they had some trouble at a boarder... my dad's gf apparently ran into an office that had soldiers with machine guns etc and started yelling at how un proffessional they were about it. Apparently they just let my dad and his gf by because the men were so ashamed that they were yelled at by a women. Just do your resuch... rent some videos. The last pilote guids I watched had a young white female traveling in Quait. She seemd to love it and had a great time. Mentioned a veiw dangers, but overal if you cautious... you should be mostly fine :) |

Im not trying to say that Egyp is safe... infact you could say that our entire world is not safe at all. Althoguh some places are far more dangerouse than others... people still live there and ppl still travel there. All the comments about Egyp have been negitive in this thread and alot of them are stories from a freind of a freind. Ive heard and seen on tv some crazy shit that happens in Brazil, however it's still on my top 3 destinations that I will goto in the next few years. Cambodia is an other place id love to go that is extreamly dangerouse. Even the travel books scream out caution and say "dont go out at night" however they still highly recomend it as a place to travel. I was scared as fuck to goto Thialand and Japan were I also heard a shit load of crazy stories from as well. Im not going to denie that scary shit happens, but ppl seem to think that if it happend once to another person that it will happen to them for sure. Check out what your actual chances are of that happening. Its all about doing your resurch and being on your toes street wise. If you have ppl to travel with its even a bigger safety bonus. |

NewsNovember 21, 2005 Egypt on high alert following bombings Egypt has ramped up security efforts around tourist sites after terrorists attacked tourists in two separate attacks in Cairo. In the first incident a man blew himself up as he jumped off a bridge near the Egyptian Museum. The blast injured an Israeli couple, an Italian woman, a Swedish man and three Egyptian nationals An hour later, the man's sister and his wife died after opening fire on a busload of Israeli tourists. The bus was taking 40 Israelis on a tour of old churches and Cairo's citadel. Egyptian authorities have detained over 200 people, while the country's tourism ministry had established a crisis cell to liase with foreign tour operators. The attacks followed a bombing last month in Cairo's main tourist bazaar, which killed two French nationals and one American. At least 34 people, including several tourists, were also killed in October when bombs exploded on the Sinai peninsula. The latest incidents have revived memories of the November 1997 terrorist attack on a tourist bus in Luxor, which left 62 people dead, including 58 tourists. The same year, nine German tourists were killed when their bus was bombed in front of the Egyptian Museum. |

I think WellbeLove's comments are right on the money. It's very important to reseach you intended destination first to learn about security, local customs, health and any other issues that can impact a safe journey. Another excellent source up-to-date info for westerners traveling overseas is to check out the Canadian and U.S. Embassies/Consulates' websites in the countries that you are planning on traveling to. These sites usually have security/health warnings and are updated regularly. These sites also contain valuable suggestions like registering with your embassy and info on local customs.

Agreed, that's almost like staying in your house after having a weeks warning that a shitstorm is headed your way. Don't bother.
