having been to egypt, but not really experienced the 'scene' over there, I can offer a bit of advice.
Egypt, although not in the throws of all the drama over there, is still a very Muslim country. That means they frown upon drinking, and western-style parties (aka, things that aren't really Muslim). Now they do have some discos over there, and I did hear some arabic flavored house music while there on a Nile cruise a few years ago, so I mean, it was still arabic though. As mentioned above, DO travel with a large group or have body guards, a guy in our group got robbed at knifepoint...but he was stupid and wandering the streets at night alone. The fact that there's still a lot of resentment to western culture (someone spinning dnb would be the epitome of it :p). Not saying don't go, but you will have to keep alert there. Silverwinged/Allison knows my love of Egypt, and I'd say go there just to see the pyramids and stuff anyways (half hour bus ride outside of downtown cairo if memory serves me right). Also, be prepared for the worst homeless situatuion you've probably ever seen. People do dig holes in the ground, and liev in them. |

yeah bri i kinda agree! you're gonna be touring soooo much anyway! but i'm kind of a bad person to give advice on this..........i would love to go to egypt but it freaks the shit out of me! i can totally see why you would be nervous! but if you'll have a crew with you(possibly even jamie) and you have an interest in going to egypt i'd say do it...........it would be such a wicked experience!

I travelled to Dubai...( UAE) a few years ago on a show tour with the Canadian Armed Forces....obviously we had ALOT of security and such, but I still definatly felt scared at times...there was an incident with an arabic man who tried to lure me away from my group-he was promply taken care of....but scary none the less....my advice....GO and enjoy your experience because it is definatly an experience, BUT make sure that you have at least one person with you that can seriously take care of you at all times...and obey all the laws (as mentioned above) drink only in the american bars...and only dress up in the privacy of your hotel!!! (pic)
Oh, and beware the men will GAWK and the women will GLARE!!!!! OH FUN!!! |

Went to egypt when I was 12 with my aunt, uncle and cousins. At that time everything seemed chill but even that they had guards around schools with ak-47's and shit..... Amazing history there but now a day's I dunno.... egypt is like the central hub of all arms going into palestine that go's to insurgents and militiamen. And from what I understand radicalists are infesting cairo..... I don't think its a safe place to be now days.... I wouldn't risk it...

Do your resurch. Read up on the loanly planet etc and get a better idea of whats going on from the veiw of a traveler. I dont want to sound nieve, but alot of the comments ive read above can be said about almost any country.
I sugest making sure you ahve a clear contract. Maybe try to get in touch wtih some other female dj's and see what they have written in their contract. Things like not letting anyone know where your staying, making them pay for a body guard/strong male freind (one who you know and trust) and anything else that protects you and makes them responsible if any harm happens to you. Play street smart while your there. Always be aware and dont do anything that feels uncomfotable. Always spend the extra cash and wait the extra bit if it means better safe than sorry. I could go on, but I what im trying to get accross to you is you cant live you life living in fear. I get so scrared and worried each time i want to head off and travel. However its the risk I take since im so keen on traveling and experinceing the world. Personaly I dont think its that much of a risk for what you get out of it. However being female there are deffinently some places in the world I would never go to alone. My dad's gf spent many years wroking in the United Arib of Emerits. She was a small white female like us and tought in the uni's there. She seemed to fine and enjoyed it quite a bit. Just be on yoru toes and dont trust anyone. Always stay wtih someone you know, watch the drinks you get, and the places you stay in etc etc... You may have to play brat to be safe. Again keep doing yoru resurch. Ask other dj's who may have been booked by the promoter, get an idea of the club your playing at and the area... and just resurch as much as possible to eliminate as many surprises as possible. |
