one could only hope Maynard's pussified A Perfect Circle influence doesn't affect what has potential to be the best album of 2006. However, I'm curious to see what Maynard will push out, considering the drastic change in their sound as the years go by. Opiate and Undertow were more conventional rock albums, and very pushy. Aenima was much more progressive than the last two, and Salival and Lateralus edged towards the psychedelic. Should be a worthwhile listen, no matter what direction they go unless, of course, they do pussy it up a notch.

Check out 'Puscifer' for some cool stuff from Maynard too.

As well..... I don't think that Opiate or Undertow could be classified as 'conventional rock' by any means.... at least not for the time they were released.

^WORD UP!!!!

Far too many people have forgotten the childlike excitement of cracking open an album for the first time and just sitting there and listening to it from start to finish!

In the day and age of digital downloading too many people have started to view music as expendable....take the time to REALLY enjoy it.... especially this one! :)

I meant it more in comparison to their later work. But you're right, relative to the other rock of the time, Opiate and Undertow are not conventional.

You misinterpreted my post, man. I wasn't saying everything Maynard puts out should sound like Tool, I was saying that I hope his sideproject doesn't affect Tool's sound as is the case with many other bands when frontman ventures off on their own for awhile. As ironic the statement is, the last thing I and so many other Tool fans would want is A Perfect Tool album. =)

Maynard said this albulm is more cynical and angst filled because of the current world situation. So you can expect this albulm to kick ass. They also said they've been listening to a lot of meshugga lately. I'm definately buying this one the day it's released.

fair enough. they stayed pretty hard on lateralus after maynard did "mer de noms" though, but they definitely got more progressive. either way, pretty excited for the new album.

*shrug*. I'm going to download the album, not pay a cent for it, and just sit there listening from start to finish. Then if it's as good as I expect it is, I'm going to put it on repeat for about a week. :)

If I ever run into Maynard by chance, I'm going to shake his hand, thank him for the excellent music, and give him $20. Hell, if someone can give me a (proveable) PayPal address, I'll send him $20 right now for the albums I've previously stolen.

The current corrupt top-heavy dinosaur that is the music industry isn't going to go away until we all stop subscribing to it. I'm not giving any more money to any major labels, period - I've actually already emailed a few semi-major artists already offering to send them $20 for stealing their albums, which i really, really liked. Two of them responded to my emails, and both times the response was a flattered "wow, you're the first person to ever offer that, glad you liked the music that much! consider it paid for!".

$20 for a CD, to the artist, is over 100 times what they receive from the label in royalties for a single CD sale. If every major artist had a paypal address and a website with free downloads, and everyone who liked the music sent them a few bucks for it, they'd make *way* more money than they do on their major labels.

Before you call me a bastard for it, go read this:
http://www.langston.com/Fun_People/2000/2000ADY.html

Sorry for thread-jacking. I'm so down with new Tool. Can't wait! :D

its the whole "pussified" comments that are getting the attention... it kind of puts a softer direction in music under a negative umbrella, as if all things in a mellow vein are to be taken like Michael Bolton or Kenny G... I personally like Tool and APC equally... APC is a lot more chill but I find they carry just as much depth and beauty as Tool, which is why I love the two bands so much... and personally, if the songs on the album took to the vein of "ticks and leeches" and "hooker with a penis", I'd be disappointed... I mean, preference is preference and I can respect that, but I don't think its fair attach a "pussy" label to music thats mellow (granted its good music and not buried in cheese)

but anyways, I don't think you'd have anything to worry about... I'm sure maynard gets all of his fill of chill in APC...

fair enough. I'm into a lot of mellow music myself, but generally the chill music I listen to still has backbone to it, which I find APC does not have. I retract the "pussy" label and replace it with a "spineless" one.

Meshuggah is definately talented music. Few big bands these days are as relentless as these men. Nothing was by far one of the most brutal and noisey albums I have heard in the past 5 years. I even read that during their tour with Tool a few years back they actually couldn't play most songs off that album because they were too hard to properly time live without jeopardizing the intensity. Their latest album is good too. The guitar work reminds me of earlier Korn riffs, but much much heavier. The vocals could do with some variety, but that's today's metal for you.

what does spineless even mean in this context?

different arrangement of the same shit... changing your comment from "pussy" to "spineless" is still putting it under a negative umbrella... APC isn't so much softer than it is "brighter" than Tool, and I could respect and understand that a lot more than "pussy" or "spineless"... each to their own, and I can understand that no band is fit for everybody, but I just feel that APC deserves a lot more respect than "pussified" and "spineless", because its still amazingly good music...

For the amount of knowledge/artistry they put into their work, anyone not buying this album isn't a true fan. I just wish more people that gave this kind of respect to such an awsome band would also be as interested in their lyrical genious not just their technical merrit. I wonder how many self proclaimed fans even understand such masterpieces as "Third Eye" for instance. They write songs in spiral form, like Sufis doing a chant, it just keeps building off itself, such a brilliant band.

Out of curiousity, what kind of music do you listen to that you could consider calm, relaxing, or just taking it down a notch?

Peter Tosh, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project, Steve Miller Band, Muddy Waters, Ben Harper, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Eek-A-Mouse, Sublime, Chris Thomas King, Sigur Ros, Leadbelly, Grateful Dead, Jack Johnson, Jeff Buckley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, The Zombies, Crosby Stills and Nash, haha, and sometimes even Cake. . the list goes on. And I love dubstep, too.

I just see APC as Maynard holding back his potential just to be chill. The man obviously is a genious, and undoubtedly has the capacity to write much better calm music. Maybe I'm being too harsh? meh.
