That's because it wasn't a very good song. Despite my love for his music, he took a lot of the emotion out of the song, in my opinion.

For the record, that was the last song Cash ever recorded. IIRC he recorded it shortly after his wife died. The age in his voice shows, but considering it's a song about someone winding down their lives, I find it a lot more appropriate to hear Johnny Cash sing it at the end of his life than Trent Reznor when everybody that was listening to it was angsty suicidal teenagers.

If you think the latter contains more emotion than the former, then you must not have much experience with death.

As much as Death Cab For Cutie would have you believe otherwise, "whiny" and "emotional" are not synonymous.
