An Interview With Deekine...
1. As an obligatory background question, I have to ask how you got into breaks. Why pursue breakbeat as both a DJ and producer? For me, breakbeat is a good middle ground for every genre of music. You can incorporate other styles of music in to it, without it seeming odd. I am a big fan of the early funk and old school hip hop, which is also based around breaks and loops. 2. You’ve been a DJ for quite some time now. What originally got you into spinning and how did that lead to you producing your own tracks? It was a natural progression for me. Being a vinyl junkie from an early age, I guess the next step is to mix, then to move on and create my own style, with inspiration from the music I have collected. I was also fascinated by scratching. 3. What styles of music would you say have inspired you the most as a producer Miami bass, electro, early funk and soul, hip hop, and drum and bass. 4. What’s your studio setup like? I supose it's all about my Mac ,and synthersizers. A roland 8080, a virus, a korg ms 2000. For vocal stuff we use pro tools. Some time's I work in bigger studio's with my partner Wizard. 5. Which producers would you say are at the top of their game right now? In breaks I like freestylers, breakfasters, house breakers. Miami bass/uk bass /ghetto tec - I like Godfather, Cutless supreme, Luke sky walker. Hip Hop wise I like Premire, Doc Dre, Timberland. 6. In your opinion, what’s the most important component of a good track? Any advice for budding producers out there? I think the groove is, as that in my opinion carries the track. 7. You’ve been pretty involved in radio over the years, how’d you get into it and who have you worked for over the years When I was 16, I got robbed for some of my records at a party. It was some kids from a nearby estate to me, who were involved with pirate radio. Eventually they got to know me, and respected me, and I got the records back, and through them I met the owners of the radio who asked me to play. I have worked on Flex, Juice, Skandel, Don fm, RAW FM, Mac fm, Delight FM, done most of them at some point or another. 8. What kinda impact do you think pirate radio has had on the underground dance scene in the UK A few years a ago, or even for the last 10 years it was huge and, you could break a record on pirate radio, more than you could on the legal stations. Nowadays, because of all the madness and violence with pirate radios, the pirate thing is a lot smaller. 9. You started up your label Rat Records, back in 1998. What’s it been like running your own imprint, and what have been some of the highlights? The highlights have been travelling around the world, picking up chicks, getting free booze, and getting paid to do it. 10. Who else is involved in Rat records with you I run the label with Ollywood. I started it with Donna d in 98. 11. Tell us a bit about your offshoot Hardcore records, what’s the music policy? Hardcore beats, is mostly a drum and bass / old school influenced label. An outlet for the more grimy stuff. 12. You recently released your long awaited album, Breaks, Beats and Blondes. How was the album received in the UK and abroad? The press has been brilliant, it seems to have been received really well, and is getting a lot of love. 13. Why didn’t you release it on Rat records? Vini from Botchit started me off, and put out my first breaks record. He sadly passed away in 2000, so it was kind of a tribute to him, and also they are a great bunch of people up there (at Botchit). 14. Can you give us info on any forthcoming releases?? At the MOMENT I am doing a UK bass/booty project with wizard, under the name 'booty bouncers'. The next release is with Wiley (UK Garage MC), skinny man (UK Hip Hop MC) and MC Wunda. Done a few remix's also, FREESTYLERS 'Boomblaster', Alex Catena 'lost my mind ' and also one for Armand van Heldon, 'my my my' 15. You’ve started referring to your sound as booty Bass, how would you describe it? Slightly more party based breaks. Like I said I am very influenced by early electro and Miami bass, so I am adding my own edge to it. 16. You’ve been gigging all over the world for some time now. Where’s your favourite place to play outside the UK and why? It would have to be Bulgaria, Hungary, and America, cause chicks are in awe of British DJs there. 17. What kinda jobs did you do prior to being a successful DJ / producer Fuck, good question, none that lasted more than a few weeks. Telesales, but I got sacked for phoning my friends all day! Office job, dismissed within one hour for falling asleep in the introduction! Retail etc. 18. Anything you’d like to add? Thanks to god for giving me such a wonderful job! Does anyone want to lend me £1,000,000??!!! |
