WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration has granted Canadians a long-sought reprieve in the escalating controversy over plans to require passports for travel into the U.S. across land and sea borders with Canada.
Bowing to months of pressure from the U.S. Congress and the Canadian government, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday it would delay the requirement for passports -- or another form of secure identification -- at land and sea crossing until at least the summer of 2008.
