Will the New Mall Where the Ozone Used to be Improve Newton?
It's right across from the local AA club, and there is no nightclub anymore.
The mall has an Extra Foods, a 24-hour Shoppers Drugmart, and another fastfood, plus about a half dozen shops. Hopefully, both Extra Foods and SD will have on-the-ball inner security. |

i feel the only people who will benefit will be:
I think SD employees may have a wider range of employee wages than EF but not by much since they only compete in the photo dept. EF might have a sizeable photo dept like Superstore, and SD's might just be a drop off like at Safeway. Then again, EF's photo dept might be drop off too, since it is cheaper NOT to have a photo lab with a skilled worker who is slowly being poisoned and will have to retire on health benefits in 5-15 years. Even so, it could help ends meet in Newton. So there are as many benefits as there are negative impact. I will overlook economic competition with earlier malls in the area, since people usually are willing to try out the new kids on the block until the shine wears off. Me, I just wonder if there will be an EB outlet and a family-owned computer store like Slaco. |

no it will not improve; cuz one newton will be always a drug town and two if tey are building a mall there; well its walking distance to some of the high schools so kids will skip school. and we all know skipping school for us was such a rush and cool to do; well some of us not me. But ya the mall would be probably a bad thing to do.

What Newton youth needs is another youth worker like Turvey.
What we do not need is help from MofC&FS or whatever it is called now. The one night I once spent guarding the office in Whalley (near 108th Ave and 138th St) opened my eyes to what open space is used for (smoking dope and other BS). I even heard one drug-addled dude verbally warn me not to touch his car, unseen. No doubt parts of Vancouver are 2-3 times worse than this! And the two contributing factors to this are: 1) lack of childcare education in high school (because teenage pregnancy is a factor, and 2) DARE whets a child's curiosity for that it's supposed to prevent. We also need condoms in high school washrooms and Responsible Drug Use classes. |

cops, enforcement and better city planning will do SFA to help that situation. Ultimately what NEEDS to happen, are better social policies for addicts. More funding and more resources to meet the need, starting at at risk youth because thats when various socioeconomic problems come into play and the funding and resources is not there to support at risk youth who stand a better chance at staying addicts into thier adulthood. Hence the current problems in various communities.Example:DTES,Whalley,Newton etc etc etc. If funds are being misappropriated or not being given at all, more cops, enforcement and city planning is only an efficient waste of tax dollars and government funds. |

That's what happens when you have Diane Watts in charge, she's a great mayor as long as it doesn't require her to look at anything negative. |
