Canucks Offseason Thread

This is the offseason speculation/pickups thread. Since Gillis says he will be "very active" during this time, lets keep a log of the building of a newer Canucks team.

today they picked up Wellwood off waivers from Toronto.
Canucks grab Wellwood off waivers

In the draft they picked up:

Cody Hodgson, C, Brampton (OHL)
Two-way center, led his team in scoring

Yann Sauve, D, Saint John (QMJHL)
I AM A VERY LARGE DEFENSEMAN

Prab Rai, C, Seattle (WHL)
I WILL PROBABLY NEVER PLAY FOR THE CANUCKS BUT I AM FROM SURREY

Depending on if he can stay healthy, Wellwood is a pretty good asset. We need a center, he can also play the power play and has offensive upside.

He has to be healthy though.

Good pick, and covers some needed bases. Heard an interview with him, doesn't sound like a dick/drama queen which is always a bonus.

Didn't know anything about him. But when you google him, you get a messageboard discussion from January saying that he's a fourth line WHL player at best, and Seattle trading for him was a terrible idea.

prab rai - HFBoards

I don't think he'll ever play a non pre season game.

I like this move if they plan to re-sign Morrison as well, giving us some depth at center. Both have potential problems with injury, so it would give us some options without any kind of major cap hit.

His high end potential is second line center, but due issues with work ethic and conditioning I think planning to use him at that position would be a mistake. Better to use him as the fourth line center and move him up if injuries make it a necessity, or if he shows potential. Another option would be signing him to a two way deal.

We'll have to wait and see how this pans out, but overall one of the better waiver pickups the Canucks have made...

I actually called the nucks picking up Wellwood yesterday to Anjew. I don't mind it, but I've been having a hard time thinking of where he'll fit in.

Assuming that Gillis is actually going to get a 1st line, it really only leaves 4th line center (IMO), Sedin will remain 2nd C, and I can't see him moving Kesler to Winger although it is possible.

Personally, I think the Canucks should grab Avery and throw him on the 3rd line.

That's the key right there.

Wether that'll happen... who knows. I for one am not going to hold my breath. Heard enough bitching about him from the Leafs fans already.

I think that Darcy Tucker would be a good pick-up and also Avery, could you imagine trying to get away from Burrows and Kesler just to find that the next line is Avery and Tucker. Checking and defence win championships, what did Detroit face every game, about 18-20 shots

If Darcy Tucker comes here I may have to consider turning in my Canucks badge.

Sean Avery is kind of like an American Psycho version of Darcy Tuckers' frustrated hoser, I might find him acceptable based on slickness and ability to nail starlets.

By the way, you know Tucker and Avery hate each others' guts right? You really going to put them on a line together? Why not get Steve Moore out of his wheelchair and put him on a line with Bertuzzi?

I was also thinking that maybe we could get Ulf Samuelsson and Cam Neely to be our assistant coaches, they could work closely together.

If Wellwood is the type of player that Gillis wants to sign to 'put his stamp on this team', then I'm all for it.

Quote:
Pros:
- Creative with the puck
- Young

Cons:
- Never has the puck because he's too weak to battle for it or keep it in his possession
- Small
- Terrible shot
- Not a very good skater
- No work ethic, at all
- Unconditioned (doesn't help he re-injured himself this offseason, won't be in shape for camp, it's like a cycle for this guy)
- Injury prone
or so I've heard.....

^he's demanding way too much and people are willing to pay. He's not worth anything over 4, and he'll get 4.5-5.

I don't think we'll see much in the way of trades, (maybe an outside chance at Williams or Cole for Bieksa) but I do think we'll see at least a couple of solid free agent signings. Dealing with player negotiations is a strong point for Gillis, I think he'll do well. Personally I'd like to see Ryder here, Malone would also be a solid pick up (albeit expensive) and there are plenty of rumors about Hossa and Demitra (a former Gillis client). July first should be interesting...

^making it to the finals def allows him to ask for a lot more. bert just got the boot, lets see who thinks he'll be our saving grace........

ryder here with the twins is something i'd def be willing to try out. I honestly don't think it would be the perfect fit, but he should be able to pot 25-30 goals.
