:: Funky and Nu-skool Breaks
Myagi's sets are like no one else's, both hard and funky, straddling the boundary between funky and nu-skool breaks, house and techno, nodding to both the past and the future of funk. Producing as Myagi and Sole Claw, Andrew Mavor has seen support from a huge variety of sources; a few notable examples include radio play by the CBC's Radio One, the dance goliath Ministry Of Sound, and John Peel and Annie Nightingale's shows on BBC One, two of the longest running and most respected dance / cutting edge music institutions on the globe.
His first single on the Canadian breakbeat heavyweight 2 Wars was remixed by DJ Czech and reached number one on the then prestigious Stickman Record Pool. This was rapidly followed by a release on Freddy Fresh's personal imprint Howlin' Records, a 7" label whose releases include tracks by dance music royals Fatboy Slim, DJ Icey, Soul Of Man, Kelley Reverb, Kool Mo Dee, Krafty Kuts, Scissorkicks and, of course, Freddy himself. It would be near impossible to find a new artist with patronage like this.
While writing as Myagi, Mavor began his Sole Claw project, an outlet for his darker, more purely breakbeat oriented material. The first release under this new moniker "Goth Chick Hand Job", came out on D-Monic's newly formed but immediately mature Pure Phunk imprint, and received massive chart and radio support from every corner of the globe.
The followup, "Edge of the Earth" looks to make even bigger waves, and signals the start of Mavor's breakout year, as both Myagi and Sole Claw. With upcoming releases on 2Wars, Pure Phunk, Howlin, WOMP!, Splank!, Money Shot, and DSV as well as remixes by Scissorkicks, Madame Mercury, Genderfix, Price Cuts, Steelzawheelz amongst others, there won't be a single self respecting DJ in the world of breaks or house who hasn't got at least one of Mavor's tracks in the bag.
