Hey
Hey everyone
I've just registered and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm from the UK and I've been in Vancouver for about a year now. MASSIVELY into trance and house music - mostly progressive and uplifting or psy trance. I've been going to 23 West most Fridays for a while now and love it there - such a great vibe and awesome music. I was at Global Gathering and Cream Fields back in the UK this summer - both absolutely incredible. I've got tickets for Armin (Thursday only at the moment - if anyone's got spare for Friday please message me - I will buy!!), Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk and Roger Sanchez - and I can't wait!! Also planning to get over to Victoria in November for Andy Moor. I'm so pleased that Vancouver attracts some top DJs, but I have few questions... 1) Is there a dress code for Plush?? I've never been there. I usually wear loose combats, dark trainers and a T-shirt as per most trance clubs (bars always want smarter stuff - not my sort of thing really) in Europe. I've always got away with that at Club 23 West but I know it's pretty laid back there anyways. 2) Are there any electronic music festivals in BC (preferably) or Canada (I'd happily travel to Toronto)? I don't like crossing into the States so I'm unlikely to visit the Miami conference... :( 3) Where are the raves at!? 2am finish for most clubs sucks bad. I love 23 West, but are there any regular progressive nights? Are there any bigger venues with the right atmosphere? I'm looking for places that aren't intimidating and full of drunk guys but that are about the music and dancing, among other things ;) Favourite DJs at the moment include Above and Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Andy Moor, Ronski Speed, Paul van Dyk, Technikal, Kyau vs Albert, Eddie Halliwell - there's just too many to list. I'm sure you get the picture. Above and Beyond do an amazing weekly Trance Around The World podcast. I'm also into Lisa Pinup, Lisa Lashes, Tidy Boys, Proteus - that sort of thing... Happy Hardcore etc. Anything goes really so long as I can dance and smile :) So that's it really... Looking to meet well connected people, make new friends and enjoy Vancouver's electronic music scene! I look forward to meeting you all in clubs :) PS: This website is the BEST I've found so far for info in Vancouver - thanks for such a great site! |

1. plush has a dress code, 'dress to impress'. I haven't been to plush in ages, so I don't know what you can/can't get away with these days. probably no hats...combats and trainers might be an issue.
2. Apex is your longest running annual festival. No big names but rather a highlight of all sorts of local DJs, and the price reflects it, usually below $20. There's other canadian stuff others can fill you in on, over in toronto and montreal 3. there are licensed, 'all night dance events' that occur at maritime labor center (small venue) or at pacific coliseum (large venue). these however are both probably not going to be what you're looking for if you want a more 'rave' vibe, but they will be the places to see your top named djs. properly vibed all nighters are fewer in between these days, and kept off fnk. |

3rd question
Agreeing with Chris and Dave, gorg has a fairly steep price tag, but some amazing progressive. There are some parties at more underground events that go till 4+ but it's very unlikely you'll hear trance and progressive. There are very few parties that showcase trance, house and psy... But if you go to some places in East Van, and ask around you'll be able to find some damn fine psy trance parties |

Thanks for the welcome :)

It's sad to hear that raves are less common in Vancouver now... I've really struggled to meet the "right people" in the scene here who know what's happening, where and when.... Been to a few after parties which have been ok but a bit slow. Will give Gorg a try soon. Where abouts in East Van do I need to ask about psytrance?? I'm not really looking for the "city permitted" shows - I guess they tend to suck. I tried to get along to the Okanagan Moondance event a few months back but the venue moved and I didn't know about it - I was out there camping. Gutted. It's great to see some top talent DJing in Vancouver - for too long it seemed that only Toronto had any decent lineups. Not that there's anything wrong with local residents - often they can offer the best nights! - it just takes ages to discover which are good and which are.... less good. AvB virtually guarantees you a great night and a memorable experience. ;) Thanks for all the replies - look forward to meeting and making new friends :) |

Well, we know what's going on but dont like saying it on the board.. esp. ebbo who thinks everyone is a pig.
and the board is most likely monitored by pigs anyways. The problem is that everyone knows about the good shows wouldnt be caught dead in mainstream parties. |

Thanks for all the replies. Not looking forward to having to "dress to impress" - that is a real let down. Especially since I don't really have much of a "wardrobe" - and certainly nothing that will "impress". Who am I trying to impress anyway? Bouncers?
So what are we talking here - no jeans or trainers, and what - a shirt with a collar!? I'm fucked. :( |
