Phan Ngan is a must, but stay as far away from Had Rinn as possible - beaches are fucking ugly and its a mad house in the days coming up to the Full Moon - which incidentally is the coolest party EVER. I stayed at a place called Coral Bay on the north end, about 30 min from Had Rinn on the dodgiest of roads. 200 B a night will get you a bungalow just up from a private beach, good for snorkling if you're into that. The joint is run by a French-Israeli family, and they sell/smoke/encourage weed smoking all the time. Fucking wicked staff. Rent a moped or a motorbike if you have the balls cause it is a bit isolated - for me the best part of Phan Ngan was ripping through the mountains on my bike at like 140 - the ultimate freedom! I didn't like Samui at all - in fact, Phi Phi and Samui are just tourist traps in my mind - everyone is trying to sell you something, and damn it pisses me off. I'd much rather be treated like a human being than hounded like a money-bag, which is what you don't get when you go to places like Ngan and Krabi. Other words of advice: Avoid the temptation to use the TAT services - they are going to fleece the fuck out of you. Buy late, and buy from the source if you can (go to the train station or just before you get on a boat) If you want to go somewhere in BKK, use a cab. Tuk Tuks are going to try to make you go on random shopping trips even though you don't ask. There is a bar called "Hollywood" in BKK that everyone has to see. 400 bhat to get in, and the rest will be self explanitory. Very few foreigners in there, but talk about a show. Don't go by yourself, and prepare for the women to line up. DJ line up till 11, then a caberet of crazy Thai Pop talent. I've never seen anything like that, nor heard a sound rig that loud. Do the night market in Krabi. Take the train, not the VIP bus. Or fly - its uber cheap to fly Phuket to BKK - 45$ Go on a trek in Chaing Mai - I'm going to tommorrow and everyone says it rocks. Don't eat beef here - they don't age it in Thailand, so it tastes like shit. Smile at the land of smiles, and it will smile back. Fo Sho. |

Im curiouse whats all the talk about Chang Mai? Im loving Phi Phi and after Phuket im almost getting use to the absolute "i give you discount" "come and try" "see you tomorro" "where you go" "you have place to stay?" "where you from" (the tailor shops lol) I almost dont mind paying a little more since the thais dont make much but boy have some ever tryed to rip us off. I got in trouble to other day more making an offer before asking how much. Its just re-dick and makes me scared to shop... Definently looking foward to some places that dont shadow the tourist every second. Although Phi Phi has had to most backpacker vibe yet that ive felt... but thanks for the advice... im looking forward to some more non thai attacking tourist spots.

chaing mai has the best night market i have ever seen in thianland...by far the best prices and the best goods!
-yeah negiotiang can be a little stressful for some...i really enjoy it and am good at it only cause thats what i do for a job back home. you always have to go up from your first offerd price...to make the seller feel better about the sale so start really low. like for a t-shirt on ko shan thai asks 350bt...i give 90bht.....after back and forth we agree on 130bht. |

Ya, it does lick being home but there are some things that are nice, things that I missed when I was over there:
Sausages Beef Safeway and IGA Taking a shower and feeling clean DJs worth their weight in salt - and man did I see some train-wrecks Arriving at a place and not having vultures run after you My roomie and I were contemplating starting a T-shirt company in Thailand. Following the whole "Same Same but Different" format, we're thinking about these ideas: "Tuk Tuk, Where you go?" "Mango Mango!" "Good for you, Good for me" "Mr. Order is Fun" "T.A.T is for Dummies" Let us know if you have any further ideas, there will be royalties. BTW, Japan blew Thailand out of the water when it came to parties, women and natural beauty. I would highly, highly recommend going there to either visit or teach english. Everything you've read, seen or heard about Japan is 100% true. East and West converge, but it's definitively Japan - and that is the coolest thing I saw in my travels. |

a few more t shirt suggestions:
its good better for you gimmie more and get this printed in large thai writing on a t shirt: your reasonably priced goods look very appealing, however i am not shopping at the moment ..it could save you hours of pointless conversation over the duration of a holiday |

We remember the full moon party at the Big Boom bar (house music only) I remember one of the main dj's that started playing there days b4 and would do slight train wreaks though the night... you would think even if he hadnt spun during his posible long travels... he could get use to it after a couple of days... or even after 3 hours of spining the constant unmached mixing would improve? WOW Ken and I where again contimplainting about geting shirts that said "no taxi" "no suit" "no boat" "no massage" and the list goes on and on lol |

Thailand is a racist country if you think about it: there are prices for Thai people and then farangs. Can you imagine if Japanese people came to Canada on vacation and were asked to pay 50% more for goods and services just cause they "had the money"? Above and beyond that, virtually everyone is trying to reel you in to extract as much as they can from you.
Don't get me wrong, I think its great to help people out, but I found there was a tension in Thailand. I would have spent far more money, not shunned as many cabs or tuk tuks if they hadn't indicated quite clearly that they wanted to rape my wallet. I wanted to spend money, but I didn't want to feel cheated or taken advantage of, so most of the time, I just got to a place and got as far away from the vulture-stand as possible. Its a pride thing: I'm not going to become your client if you're obviously trying to fleece me, even if it is very little to me; I showed them respect, but it was not reciprocal. |

anyways, the economy in thailand is shit. it depends on tourist dollars almost entirely in some areas to even survive. that is why they have different prices for falangs and for locals. they know that we have pockets full of baht, because they see us throw it around evey where we go.( compared to most of them who struggle to get by). i dont think it is so bad to have to pay a liitle more, cus shit , your on vacation. |
