Apple's are expensive for the faster ones,.. this should start u on ur way... also when u find a model.. try a site like zzsounds or something to find the best price...

i've heard of people getting good prices at www.atic.ca a local company...

Toshibas are a pretty safe bet. The A60/A70 models have been pretty popular where I work, and both are under $2000. Acer's laptops aren't bad either. And the 12" Apple iBooks are the shiz too (but I bet you already know that ;)).

Good call on the no HP/Compaq. I don't know about other stores, but I know mine can't service them while they're under manufacturer's warranty. They have to get sent out to HP for repairs.

de-ken is an unknown quantity at this point
i was about to get a laptop too so i did a lot of research... but decided against it in the end.

dell is the best value by far. whatever u find at futureshop for example... dell is cheaper, and a way better system. and u can customize too. i already have a dell desktop... so im pretty happy with it. compare the different prices for "students" and "home/home office use" though... cuz sometimes they have different promotions and one ends up being cheaper than the other.

another place u might want to consider is frontier computer on broadway (across the street from futureshop). they got some cheap deals too for laptops... i think they have a website too. just type it in on yahoo.
