i am currently a 1st year steam - pipefitter apprentice, but i plan to challenge my 1st and 2nd year welding apprenticeship during my 2nd and 4th year as a pipefitter.

once i become a certified journeyman steam - pipefitter, i will hit the fabrication shops for a year so i can get all the required hours i need to challenge my journeyman's ticket in my 3rd year of the welding apprenticeship.

after that, i will challenge my interprovincal tickets for both trades. once i successfully complete both of them, i will take all the welding tickets i can get my hands on.

i’m talking b-pressure in carbon, stainless, inconel, titanium, TIG-welding in other alloys including nickel, chrome, etc.

once i’m finished those, i will either work as a fitter-welder on contract, or as a rig welder. fitter - welders on contract can make from $40 to $50 an hour plus benefits. rig welders with just a b-pressure carbon steel ticket can make anywhere from $75 to $90 an hour, and highly trained rig welders holding multiple alloy tickets and tickets in TIG and CV welding can make anywhere from $110 an hour, to $150 an hour.

but what i really want to do is get into international sales. work abroad in different markets selling all different kinds of products and services, and see where my career will take me.

but i always want to have something to fall back on, so i think working towards a journeyman ticket in the trades is the best thing anyone can do. no matter what happens in life, u will always have a job that makes great money.

its a long journey, but it seems like the right path for me.

I Graduated with a technologist diploma in robotics from BCIT in 99. I got my first job with a biometeorology research group at UBC developing CO2 monitoring equipment for a year and then got a job in the fuel cell industry 6.5 years ago.

I still work for the same company in an engineering capacity doing fuel cell hybrid energy system design. My company pays for my schooling so I will also be done my electrical engineering degree in a little over a year. When I'm done my degree I will most likely continue on with either a Masters in engineering or an MBa.

I've pretty lucky to get chance to work at a start up and go through the process of seeing our company go through rounds of venture capital financing and eventually getting purcharsed by a much larger company. Being one of the early employees I was able to see my stock options become liquid.

My ultimate goal is to eventually move to California and continue working in the fuel cell world or in another greentech field as a professional engineer. In the next ten years or so I could see myself in more of a business oriented roll.

My goal is to become a paramedic. Becoming one does require you to move usually to a smaller town for training. If I can’t stay in Vancouver after I get level 3 first aid, I will consider something else in the health care department such as nursing or if I am prepared for the school, becoming an x-ray tech is appealing to me as well.
