im gonna sound like a downer, dont mean too. however all the news about tourists getting hurt, jailed or killed down there freaks me out about travelling in south america. other than that, have a safe and fun trip.

really? what have you heard? can you link me to any info?

i ask because this will be my third time down in latin america and aside from the usual theft issues(wich are the same in anycountry when your backpacking) ive found it to be extremely safe and not at all what its painted to be in our media.

i was espescially suprised about columbia, sure it has its marxist gurellia groups and drug runners...so what. they really dont care about backpackers all that much. and i know this from first hand experience.

unplug out of mainstream american media. they love to instill fear into people so they never leave their own country and just contribute to the amrican...*ahem* northamerican grid.

my next journey, after New Zealand, will be to the middle east in late 08. but thats just insane cause i could get kidnapped and beheaded right?

This is the same trip i am planning for next January, i am freaking jealous! It is going to be quick though, i am hoping to spend 4-5 months at it, with a month sitting somewhere volunteering.
What are you planning to do in regards to the Durien Gap? Overland?
Do you have a blog, because i would love to read about your ups and downs.

wow...4-5 months! that is awsome!. yeah my 1.5 month will be fast but thats allright. if its one thing ive learnd from my other backpacking trips is that you can cover alot of ground pretty fast. its amazing how small this planet really is....i can only do 1.5 mos cause i have one of those working holidy visa things for new zealand wich starts in the fall and 3507321c wanted to be back in time for shambala

THE DARIEN GAP!!!!!!!...oh dude thats been my obsession for the last week. reading and reading about possible routes to take. if i had more time id most likely pay a guide to take me through it...but its like the most dangerous, lawless region on the planet....only a select few have made it through overland without any problems wich drives me even more to one day cross it by foot....but most likely ill just take a boat into cartegena,in reality though....i think ill just take a flight from panama to equador.

my budget?...well for the flights it was about 1300 cause i procrastinated and booked late (lol) and daily expenses im going to set at 10-20 usd a day with a 300 usd cushion for activites like diving or surf camps i might want to try...

Word. If i can stretch it financially i think i will look into sailing. i have never been out on a boat like like for more then an afternoon so i think it would be a good experience. It sounds pretty hairing in that region.....i don't want to get caught up in any crazy para-military coke running shenanigans.
Do you think you are cutting it close, money wise? I have read that a realistic daily amount is more like 25-30..then again i have never been. In any case, make sure to keep us all updated.
