i don't find pc-attacking jokes very funny anymore. is that a sign of maturity?

went out with some friends i hadn't seen in ages and we got together for some food. one friend had been traveling abroad and that was the occasion. the whole night dude would be telling racist/south park style jokes.

i kinda groaned after a while of this and excused myself from the table.

im not completely averse to this kind of thing, afterall i loved in living colour as a kid, but last night really left a bad taste in my mouth.

thoughts?

yes it was. really unfortunate too, since they say traveling is supposed to broaden your horizons but it just became more fodder for racist humor for him.

we even had two girls with us that were new and he kept making not so subtle digs at them in regards to their background.

at one point one of them turned to me and said "im thinking when he went to the travel agent he should've picked up a Lonely Planet instead of that box set of South Park" :embarrest::P

non-PC jokes have a very specific set of requirements that have to be present to be acceptable, never mind funny.

Being non-PC or racist is, by nature, associated with a lack of understanding or knowledge on a give subject. Labeling people in to recognizable groups is something that all animals do, the major difference is that human know can identify the action as being racist.

I the end its all just broken logical steps. For instance all FnK members access this board via the internet access. Top label FnK members as people with internet access would be a reasonable logical step. Drawing the conclusion that all FnK members have constant internet access would be flawed logic

Ironically statisticians are the most racist bunch of assholes on the planet.

he was making asian driver jokes, and black people eating fried chicken. the girls were asian and afro-Caribbean.

absolutely no one reacted to it and he kept saying it in an offhanded way like sarah silverman would do, so it's not presented as a joke and there's no burden to laugh and there's no risk on his part i guess.

whole night was painful.

It is often hard to be the ifrst one to bring something like this up, but you would be suprised to see the support you get after you do. Next time, tell him how it is and i am sure your friends will support you.

There are good tasteless jokes and bad tasteless jokes.

Good tasteless jokes are ones that make you laugh cuz they're funny.

Bad tasteless jokes are ones that make you laugh cuz you're uncomfortable.

For example, bad tasteless joke:
Q: You know what I hate about asian drivers?
A: They're asian!

And a good tasteless joke:
Q: Why can't Hellen Keller drive?
A: Because she's a woman!

Similar in design but very different. The good one has a set up and a punchline, the bad one is just trying to be rude.

For every 9 bad tasteless jokes there's one good one. And yes, it lacks tact. But at least there's some semblance of wit to it.

As already ranted in another thread, I don't really like Sarah Silverman's humour. She could at least try to be intelligent about it instead of going for cheap shock value. Her performance in The Aristocrats was abysmal simply for that reason. She just took it too far without being funny.

Man, people who are sooo bothered by the world being 'TOO GODDAMN PC' and take it way too far by being the total opposite are just as bad as the people they loathe. Their jokes are never funny.

and I agree, if we could do away with people who are 'REDNECK AND PROUD OF IT', along with the 'I'M A BITCH AND I DON'T GIVE A FUCK DEAL WITH IT BECAUSE THAT IS ALL THAT I REALLY HAVE GOING FOR ME PERSONALITY WISE' and the 'I'M JUST ALWAYS GOING TO PLAY DEVIL'S ADVOCATE FOR THE HELL OF IT' entirely, the world would definitely be a less annoying place.

I came into this thread thinking it was about the PC hate that Apple commercials try to spread. So I'm going to reply as I would have with my intial intention. I hate those stupid mac commercials, they're never funny and makes me embarrassed to own a mac.
