I'm not surprised by their decision at all, a majority of those okanagan cities are pretty much retirement communities.

I'm sure wakefest will have no problem finding a welcoming host.

From what I understand of the news report I was watching on it, people were trashing hotels to costs beyond what the increase in business provided. Also, people were exhausting the (ADDITIONAL) police and security forces set in place for keeping these events safe.

Some very bad apples ruined it for everyone. Hope it was worth it!

kelowna is hardly a retirement community. this pumps 9 million dollars into their economy in one weekend. i understand that an event like wakefest brings trouble with it, but it isnt like this date is a surprise to the police every year. preparation?

what next? peachfest? merritt?

Good times.

They're a good 5.2% above the national average.

On one hand they could try restricting the alcohol served at the event. Meaning less beer gardens.

However a lot of ppl just dont know how to party responsibly. Wake fest IS known to the locals of BC as a place to party. I dont blame the police for being stressed. Something has to be wrong if large croweds of people can watch a sporting event at GM/BC place on a weekly basis, but police cant bare a weekend event once a year?

I am sure the town is proud and happy to host the event, but not if it attracts the wrong crowed.

ive actually never been to wakefest- but i have lived in the okanagan, and generally you see a lot of drunken violence and stupidity from the younger tourist population...i think lots of people just figure since they are not at home, in some small town its ok to act like a douche. Apparently this year's wakefest was over the top with incidents - yeah cops can control a certain amount, but when you have gangs like the HA (its not just old people and yuppies in kelowna) clashing with other groups as apparently happened this year, im sure that stretches the police resources thin. (and probably scares the shit out of them)

Penticton is a good example of drunken douchebags ruining the fun for everyone - since the riot way back in 92 the town sucks in terms of providing young people with a good time.

WTF Rhia. This is BC. There is no "less beer", only "we ran out".

Not gonna happen when the govt. has that much revenue to make on not running out.

We can't keep our Rainforest or lumber under control, but we'll never run out of booze.

I think it was a good call on Kelowna's part.

I really don't think it should be allowed to continue like that, just because it's come to be expected. It's unacceptable to behave like that, and I think people could use the wake up call.

The promoter for the merritt mountain music festival held a press conference a few weeks ago discussing changes on the way they operate. Particularly the "camping" area where some crazy parties occur... Thats not going to be happening anymore. Alcohol will not be permitted on campground area's as well as any loud music. They will be hiring security to do patrols and if they catch you they will escort you out of the venue.
