Suggest some books!

I'm going back out to the bush tomorrow for three weeks. That's 252 working hours that I need to fill up with quality literature. So far on my list are the second book in the Dark Tower series, and Thich Nhat Hanh's "Art of Power."

Anything you can suggest: philosophy, fantasy, (entry-level) poli-sci, pretty much anything so long as it's well written.

Crooked recently made a post about Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series. It's an enjoyable read.

As of right now I'm working my way through "Game of Shadows" which deals with the whole Bilco/Marion Jones Steroid scandal.

Pick up either Siddhartha or Steppen Wolf by Herman Hesse. Both are great reads if you haven't read them already.

"The Life and Times of Billy the Kid" by Michael Ondaatje is good little read. "Coming Through Slaughter" is also a phenomenal book by Ondaatje. It's loosely based on jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden.

Give me a little longer to wake up and I'll get you some more.

yeah siddartha is a good but quick read, i'd recommend it.

freakonomics is another quick but interesting read.

i also highly recommend the "a song of ice and fire" series by J R R Martin... best fantasy series i've read.

I just finished re-reading Atwood's Oryx and Crake a few weeks ago, and it was excellent.

Khaled Hosseini's the Kite Runner is also very good (I've heard wonderful things about his book A Thousand Splendid Suns too!).

Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough and Michael Braungart is a good non-fiction read.

And here's some more that I thoroughly enjoyed from my contemporary Canadian lit class:
The In-Between World of Vikram Lall by M.G. Vassanji.
Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson.
All That Matters by Wayson Choy. (Set in Vancouver, kind of a fictionalized history of a Chinese family living in Vancouver's chinatown, if you're a fan you should also check out Denise Chong's The Concubine's Children.)

Oh I've also heard fab things about Caroll Shields' Larry's Party (apparently there's an entire chapter dedicated to his penis) though I still haven't had time to read it myself.

Enjoy!

Dear Gusto,
I'm sorry I have offended you. There is room in my ridiculously boring work life for your choices as well. Please forgive me, I'm baking you cookies.

Sincerely,
The colourful one.

Sometimes I lay awake at night tracing his name on the condensation building up on my window while watching the rainfall, just hoping that he'll give me good karma in the morning.

I think some Irvine Welsh is in order, as well.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. Keep em coming! I go through a book a day out there, usually.

If you're down with Welsh and you've already read "Trainspotting", I'd suggest picking up "Porno" it's a bit of a sequel. "Glue", "Ecstasy" and "The Acidhouse".

I've enjoyed all of them.

Porno is on the list. I own Acidhouse and I've read Ecstasy. I'll pick up Glue as well.

This is all assuming the library has em, but the more suggestions I get, the more likely I'll find enough material.
