Getting a new laptop = SUPER FANTASTIC

as well as super pain in the rear!

It's always the same when you get a new PC... you had things all nice and comfy and now you have a new system with all sorts of shit on it you don't want and a shitload of things you need to install. I HATE IT.

Has anyone here used the whole easy transfer thing at all? Is it really all that easy? I'm thinking that'll be the best way to transfer over all my music/photos/movies etc...

I'm mostly lost when it comes to these sorts of things so any help would be appreciated.

It takes longer, but I usually make the move with an external firewire drive. I just don't trust Microsoft with ANY important process that I can do manually.

I AM A NATURALLY MESSY PERSON AND I FIND EACH NEW DEVICE AS A CHANCE TO START OVER FRESH.

AS SOMEONE WITH 2 NEW LAPTOPS IN THE LAST FISCAL YEAR I GENERALLY USE THE 'NEED TO HAVE' BASIS FOR MY SHIT, WHERE I ONLY TRANSFER THINGS OVER WHEN I DECIDE I NEED TO HAVE IT. THAT BEING SAID I USUALLY MOVE OVER "MY DOCUMENTS", THE STUFF ON MY DESKTOP, MY "FNK NUDES" FOLDER AND THATS ABOUT IT. I LET STEAM + OBJECT DESKTOP DL AND INSTALLL MY GAMES. l

A really good program to use to transfer your shit over.

either a external hd case or if you want to do some file transfers.

hfs
Small program, like an ftp server. i transfered 2 gigs of porn and music to my laptop yesturday, 30 minutes at 9.9mb

If you want to go the external hd way, they cost approx $20.00 and so worth it!

Usually being less than tech savvy doesn't bother me but right now I wish I knew a bit more. I really don't even know where to start!

I have to say, having my /home directory on a separate partition has been a godsend for changing over to new hardware configurations. Also super useful for reformats and changing distros. But that's if you're a lunix nerd like me.

I'm gonna echo the external HD sentiment. If you've already got a hard drive, get an enclosure, they're like 40 bucks and turn any internal HD to an external. Plus hard drives are the new CDs, and make it super easy to pirate using the sneakernet (never underestimate the bandwidth of a backpack).

Man I keep reading it over and over but all I can see is 'blah, blah, blah, gibberish, big-tech-speak, blah'
