I can't believe I didn't notice this for nearly a month after the bill was proposed. This is Big Pharma lobbying against our rights. Canada's health policies are one of the reasons it's so amazing to live in this country. I can't imagine NATURAL health products being taken away from us.

There's a rally in Vancouver posted on the Stop C-51 website. I will be there.

while i definitely think that alternative methods of medicine should be accessable to all canadians, i think a lot of the facts on that website are a little sensational.

while i didn't have the attention span to read the entire bill, i am interested in knowing exactly what in the bill they took to publicize their 'facts' from...

oh, and i really truly hope that everyone who is protesting took the time to let their MP know about how they feel about the bill

doesn't everyone realize they're a minority government? i couldn't honestly see the libs or the ndp siding with a bill that restricts access to alternative healing methods. not by a long shot.

by regulating these medications, does it necessarily mean they are abolishing them altogether??

I'm on the fence with this one. Some people are doing themselves a GREATER disservice by taking "natural" remedies willy-nilly without having a proper knowledge of their real effects on the body.

From what I remember in high school, yes. However the conservative govt could withdraw it prior to the second vote.

That being said, here's what Wikipedia has to say on the matter:

Confidence motions are generally originated by the Government to reinforce its support in the House, whilst no confidence motions are introduced by the Opposition. Important bills that form part of the Government's agenda are generally considered matters of confidence. Furthermore, the confidence of the House of Commons is deemed to have been withdrawn if that House "withdraws Supply," that is, rejects the budget.

What I gather from that (assuming Wikipedia's right) is that it would be considered non-confidence if it was a major issue that the government wouldn't be able to function without (such as a budget). But for standard-fare legislation it seems that it wouldn't.

That and I think everybody's forgetting that the Libs are every bit as opportunistic as the conservatives. I seem to recall a budget surplus under Manley that went straight to corporate tax cuts instead of health care or education like the rest of the country wanted. They're every bit as much of suckers to the lobby industry as anybody. And I really don't think Dion thinks he has the popular support to dissolve this government into another election at this point (assuming that my original guess was correct and wikipedia is full of shit). Particularly something that's not hitting the Big Media radar like this one isn't.

I feel the same way. Too many people are all up in arms when they don't understand that many "natural health" products out there aren't regulated in any shape or form and are potentially harmful.

im not going to read the bill but by all the dope jokes im assuming "natural health" products are dope, and not actualy natural remedies.

although in the states, the FDA totally constricts literally hundreds of natural remedies that actually work better than the synthesized ones, just to make a profit. fuckin scoundrels.

This amendment wouldn't be a no-confidence vote, something like a thrown speech, tax and spending are automatically non-confidence votes. It also can be used to take down a government as seen with the Liberal accountability scandal. After such a vote the GG has to dissolve government and call an election. Only once has the general refused to do this, now it's merely a symbolic gesture by the GG. Also, some parties won't call a vote of non-confidence even if they don't agree with a bill simply because if they don't have the support they will own themselves in an election.

I dont understand all the emphasis on the benefits of 'alternative' medicine. In the past when it was all that we had we weren't living particularly long or healthy lives, under real scientific review the efficacy of many of these remedies is questionable.

how many people die of natural remedies every year and how many die from pharmaceuticals? basically this is about money and controlling people's health. natural remedies allow people to live healthier lives without paying heaps of money to the pharmaceuticals.

For example, I do construction and was having a lot of joint and muscle pain from working long hours. When I went to see a doctor they prescribed some muscle relaxants (real nice shit by the way) that helped but only for a few hours at a time. when I went to see a natural health practitioner (thanks Mom) it was suggested that I start taking Glucosamine and Omega 3-6-9. after a month on the supplements my conditions improved and after 3 months they were gone.

so please name one instance of the real threats posed by natural remedies.

I think this is much more appropriate when talking about the pharmaceuticals than natural health options. in fact prescriptions reacting badly to each other kills 100's of people every year! because ritalin cures kids from ADD and Vioxx is a great pain killer...
