Friend going to NYC (share your travel tips)

My friend is taking off to NYC with his family on Weds. He doesn't have a lot of time there but I'm sure he would benefit from some advice on what and what not to do. Also if someone has some cool spots that may not be typical tourist crap.

I was there last month and prefered downtown to uptown. Places like the East Village, Lower East Side, Soho, Greenich Village, West Village, Union Square are chalk full of cool shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars.

You can pretty much pick any street you want and start walking and you're bound to find something cool...

i spent nearly 3 months just wondering the streets of manhattan everyday checking shit out, i think that is the best way to explore any city. But when i went back with parents a couple summers ago we only had a day and a half in the city, so i suggested a bus tour. i'd say do that, even though i hate touristy things it really is the best way to get a feel for a city and where everything is, hop on hop off.
