Random Question - Does anyone have a star named after them?

If so where did you have it done?

Im looking to have a star named after my best friend and her husband as a wedding gift.

When I google "naming your own star" or "star registry" so many websites come up and a few say the International Star Council doesnt recognize them.

Apperiantly you can only get them named as Novelty gifts. The International Astronomical Union doesnt actually register them with names, but all the stars discovered are catagorized by number instead.

Does anyone think its tacky getting them a "novelty" gift?

Having a star named after you is pretty damn cool IMO. It comes with a plaque and certificate or w/e depending on what you pay for.

All of these website's / service's saying that you can "NAME YOUR OWN STAR" and have a certificate presented is probably the biggest scam ever. Its a "make believe" present... its holds no value or serve's no use. Infact that star can probably blow up or get swallowed by a black hole at any time... A sign of destruction...... What a wonderful "make believe" gift it would be to give to a newly married couple.....

That said, why settle for just a star? Why not something cooler, like a pulsar or even a galaxy? There's more unnamed galaxies than unnamed stars.

She had the document framed, and it was really impressive!

Yeah, all the stars are identified but, you can officially have a particular alpha-numeric speck in the sky named whatever you'd like.

This might sound incredibly selfish..but when I get married, I want gifts that I can use! Like money!!!

I always give a small personal gift with $100. And people are always so happy. Usually newlyweds need money to pay off wedding debts, put a down payment on a house..ect

I definitely like the idea of the save the rainforest thing..but maybe for a birthday. The star is a really cool idea too..I just think most people wouldnt appreciate it as a wedding gift.

And since I dont want to be one of the friends that contribute to their wine glass collection (which will probally be about 100 after their done), im looking for original ideas.

After reading the rain forest website im not to set on that either, so basically im back to square one.

if they have everything, then they should ask there geusts to donate to a local charity. Ive been to one wedding in which all the geusts where asked to make a donation instead of buying gifts.
