Harper is from Calgary, what do you expect? while I find his comments about the arts pretty offensive I'm personally more concerned about his social conservative views. among other things the man believes that Dinosaurs walked the Earth 4000 years ago!!

An interesting article, but I should point out she links to an article that contradicts her own article...

the arts returned the favour by providing 1.1 million jobs within cultural industries and contributed $86 billion to the GDP. To put that in context, Margaret Atwood noted that the arts industry employs roughly the same number of Canadians as agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, oil & gas and utilities - combined

Margaret Atwood's article states:

The Conference Board estimates Canada's cultural sector generated $46-billion, or 3.8 per cent of Canada's GDP, in 2007. And, according to the Canada Council, in 2003-2004, the sector accounted for an “estimated 600,000 jobs

Don't get me wrong, I can't stand harper, but that's a terribly bias and misquoted article.
