As a suggestion, why not hit up a few small club nights (plenty of postings for weekly sessions on here)? Pound back a beer or three to loosen the nerves and start up a B.S. session with a few people. While you might not make instant friends, you'll probably at least meet some people you wouldn't mind hangin' with down the road.
