Just finished Debt of Bones by Terry Goodkind, the latest book in the Sword of Truth series.
He attempted, in a novel, (approx 180pg) to explain why/how the boundry went up. It was disapointing.

Nietzsche is brilliant. I don't think i agree with you that not many have heard of his name. He revolutionized philosophy as we know it.
Beyond Good and Evil is an awsome read.

I also recommend: The Gay Science (i think it was written after BGE)

i just finished Observatory Mansions by Edward Carey (really really good book)

and i just started You Shall Know Our Velocity! by Dave Eggers today. so far it's good...i like his stream of consciousness writing style.
