Decrease in NHL scoring?

What do u think is the most accountable thing for the decrease in scoring in the national hockey league? Since this is a big thing in the nhl right now, the hot topic other than the player barganing agreement i thought we might discuss it as well.

Here are a few points i came across in a book i have been reading and they make sense. At least i believe so now lets see if we can get more info added to this thread alright?

My Notes: *below*

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-The league went from six teams to 30 t hanks to expansion, leaving the league with talent divided into 30 teams instead of six

-clutching and grabbing has risen, along with officiating decreasing, and increasing according to each diff ref. The trap and its various forms.

-goalies have increased padden and with it save percentage has risen from an average of .875 to .906% in 1997 who knows what its at now .914%? maybe and shots on goal decreased from 30.6 to 26.9 in 97-98.

so add to this if you want please. i want to make this a big thread

Goat has a spectacular aura aboutGoat has a spectacular aura about
goalie padding is way too big.
may as well throw a midget in the net with a wooden cutout of a goalie.

^ true add to that the fact that the big ass goalies don't face as many hard scoring chances as they did in the 80's.

Defense was at an ultimater low during the 80's

as mentioned goalie equipment is way too big now. As we all know they are thinking to going back to 10inch pads and to no surprised both Toronto goalies were bitching and cracking jokes about it when asked what they thought. Ed Belfour even thought he was funny and said "apparently they will have a new rule where you will get a penalty everytime you get down in the butterfly position" stupid Leafs all they can do is bitch and whine. And another big factor is jsut the fact that alot more teams are playing defense first now. before it was New Jersey but now we got all these mofos doing it. And i agree with the expansion cause it really killed hockey a bit. 30 is too much but obviously 6 is too little

Blame it on the trap... Personally I don't mind the lower scoring games. To me watching a team playing proper defence is just as amusing as watching a lot of scoring.... I don't see why this is such a huge issue. a soccer game can pack 40 - 60k people in a stadium eventhough only a goal or two is scored.

Ya true but hockey thrives itself on the speed of the game, and the flow of the game, if its high end to end defensive game. Thats acceptables

but alot of the games now are mostly grabbing and clutch style defense which leads to no flow in the game whats so ever

soccer is more about the quality of the goal, where as in hockey goals are essential, along with momentum which is built on teams scoring on the power play, or killing penalities etc

you cant compare soccer to hockey. soccer was never a high scoring game like hockey and its way slower pace too.

The trap is a big factor especially if you are playing teams like New Jersey... fuck they are a boring team to watch. Plus I think the other most over looked aspect of the game is all the grabbing the players do. If you watch a game between a high ranking team and a low ranking team the amount of grabbing that goes on is disgusting. There has to be something done about it, but I am not sure how one would call a penalty on that?? Its not really holding and its not tripping or anything like that. Should they perhaps come up with a new penalty for those who seem to tag along for the ride? I dont know... hard to call I guess

Personally I feel its the quality of the fan myself..... I think hockey tends to have way more fly by night fans who know absolutely nothing about the game, especially since its become big in the US. As far as the grabbing thing goes it can totally be called as holding or even interference if the puck isn't around. Holding is a penalty.

its suppose to be called obstruction, cause it slows the game down, and the person getting the penalty is obstucting the other players ability to get to the puck or into the play.

Its the refs and the nhl head people like nba headman bettman lol. they don't know what they are doing anymore

Did you watch any hockey this week?

There were like, 15 games in which 6-9 goals were scored, several in which one team got between 6 and 8 goals.

I think all of this 'low' scoring is maybe more a product of fans watching too much basketball than anything else.

Scoring for teams has gone from an average of 300+ goals a season per team, to well under 300 per team now

Totally off topic here but since we are talking about the state of afffairs in the NHL....

I think that the refereeing in the league has deteriorated a lot in the last year. The more games I watch the more i see refs that are influenceing the outcome of the game, by either making calls FOR the losing team in order to keep the games close.

Its like they had a meeting and said "Look, we want you guys to keep the games even so you have to make the appropriate calls to accomplish this."

To me this is bullshit. I think good officiating is when you can barely tell they are on the ice. I think this new pension for directing the flow of the game should be stopped and stopped now.

BTW did you notice how many games have resulted in OT this year??

disagree. True this week there has been alot of high scoring games but on average it has been down. Obviously there will be weeks here and there where theres an outburst of offense.

That would be a good idea... also eliminate the 1st row of seating all the way around the rink to create more space would b wise too....

i also think that if the goalie gets a penalty then the goalie should be in the penalty box...thus the net being empty....therefore more PPG and tougher defense practice hahahah...that will smarten the goalies a lil more. :smoke1:
