Usually I'll start off with a syncopated kick/snare pattern ~ 180 or 200 bpm, or maybe a funky bassline, possibly with some mean distortion, then I'll build percussion up until I can think of some lyrics or pads or guitar I want to lay over it, then I'll record an 8-bar pattern or so and break and build it until I get more melodic or rhythmic inspiration, and then try to develop it into something interesting.
