internet attacks / hacks?

(ok i don't know which section this thread goes under but oh well.. it can be moved)

so within the past hour and 20mins or so, i've received 23 attack detections.
anyone know of how i can find out this source? use an ip sniffer or something? so as long as my firewall's on, i don't think the person/thing can get through.

it's a port scanning detected from different ips.
does this stuff happen every other minute? or am i just another helpless xp newbie.

your a newbie.

don't worry about it, most of the time it's random scans from bugged machines randomly scanning class c of your specific ip range for open shares, which then gives you the specific worm and continues.

think of linux as a red stoplight! and windows xp is the police officer directing traffic. xp directs the traffic but then linux stops it and then IE (which is the drunk driver) crashes into everything and goes AHHH

yes and no.

linux isn't unstopable, many hacks/virus are multi-platform. they just are more asseptable through M$ programs. I chuckled about the IE comment.

well i saw linux.. it looks pretty cool. i might do it if i get the time to learn about it and if all the software i use is compatible with it.

as for ie...
i hear mozilla or opera is a bit better? mozilla is supposedly by netscape... and i don't like netscape... any opinions?
i gotta firewall antivirus system and an ad filter. but damn.. these attacks are averaging a block every 3 mins... or 2 mins.. quite a lot...

i didn't have all this when i was using win98.. i've only used xp for a couple weeks. within the first 5minutes after my friend installed xp , we got hit by a worm when we were looking for nvidia or hard drive info.

i used to be a computar genius in highschool.. but i've forgotten everything.. suggestions? possibly block the ports that these infected machines are scanning...properly config ur firewall? get better antivirus software? stop clicking on porn pop ups?

linux is only effective if the person using it knows how to properly use and config it.. it can be just as open if not more so to attack then windows.... linux is more effective for someone who keeps up to date with exploits etc etc...

And have you been affected by them? UH, NO. If you have all the windows updates then just click on the little button for XP firewall, it blocks next to every incoming packet and then you can stop whining like a sissy girl. Fuck anti viruses, i've never used one in my entire life (and i've been using computers that long) and i've never had a virus. Oh, and as for "ad filter." what the fuck - google toolbar, buddy.

a) not all of us run a legit version of windows, so updating to SP1 isnt possible, so no XP firewall. ZoneAlarm free firewall download page
b) so your 'laid' count is as high as your 'virus' count
c) the google toolbar isnt very easy to find, lucky for him its headlined on Download.com
