I believe there are some older "formalities" that should be updated for everyone convenience, but as a whole, I appreciate unions. I have benefitted from them much more than my non-union jobs I've held.

Also, in the profession I'm in (Educational Assistant in the public school system) I don't really have much choice as to whether I go union or not. Public school employees are all unionized (in different unions - as far as I know. Perhaps I'm making a bad generalization). I don't want to work in the private school system bc they are not unionized and I see more cons for my friends who work for them than any cons that I face.

*EDIT: I understand that it's a pain for ppl like Myra, Sue bitch, Kam and Wum among other that their respective shcools may be participating in a rotative strike, but what about the people who belong to those unions who deserve pay raises, better treatment, or whatever issues they happen to be fighting for at this time. People don't usually strike for unreasonable purposes. It just doesn't always seem reasonable to everyone (in this case, students) bc they are being affected by it in a negative way. But it's negative for people going on strike too. People who go on strike don't get paid (well sometimes they do get paid for like a day or two or depends... Im not up on my striking protocol), and also cause conflict sometimes with their coworkers who don't belong to the same union as them and are unable to cross picket lines. All while just trying to improve working conditions for themselves and their dependent families. Just sharing the other side of it.

At the end of the thing it says it affects all those schools including Douglas.

I dont understand why it says "starting with kwantlen"

either way i was looking forward to spending a day at the New west douglas. Looks like i'm sleeping in now.

First of all, this isn't a teachers union. Read up. Learn. It's the SUPPORT STAFF.

And they haven't had a raise in YEARS. I am not entirely sure how long it's been, but it's unfair, however the length is.

And maybe the blame can be pushed more onto the government? After all, the BCGEU hasn't had a contract since June because neither side can agree on the terms.

It COULD affect Douglas. From the look of things, the rotating strike will START at Kwantlen, and it may rotate between the schools and campuses.

Check out www.bcgeu.ca for updates. But the press release I posted up there says

The BCGEU has committed to providing one working day notice of upcoming job actions at Lower Mainland and northern BC colleges.

So you'll get notice if Douglas has job action taking place.

Or check your school's website. I know BCIT's website is updating it with the latest info on the strike.

yeah i guess your right...i dont like our janitors...they freak the shit out of me. maybe thats why im not for the whole thing. i mean its their fault for taking the job...they didnt have to become part of the supporting staff. thats their problem. they should have studied better at school.

Who is to really say they didnt you really do come to quick conclusions about people. Im willing to bet the janitors at your school dont like you much either you sound like an idiot with a big mouth. One day when your in the workforce and wanting more money but the boss wont let you for whatever reason you are gonna wish to fucking god you had a union I know I do..

Being a custodian is a really important job. If they went on strike and school continued, think of the mess that would follow. Custodians are just as important to the shcool running smoothly as the teachers, teacher/lab assistants, counsellors, and clerical/admissions staff. You come across as someone who doesn't appreciate the system it takes to support a school that you are privaledged enought to attend. And please don't make gross generalizations about Janitorial staff and their intelligence. How many do you know personally? How many have you asked about ho they feel about their lives and their jobs? You come across as a very ignorant person who is not appreciative of the advantages (I assume) you have in life. Some people enjoy their profession and take pride in what they do. It's not a last resort for everyone who becomes a custodian to become one, as you make it seem. And at the very least, these people are employed and that contirbutes to their personal well being, as well as society as whole. Think about THAT on your day off while they're striking!

Yeah, well coming from someone who has never worked as part of a union, if I want better working conditions/benefits or more money, I either work harder or look for a new job.

I think unions are incredibly old fashioned. People used to go on strike to protest dangerous work conditions and fairly meagre pay. They did clear the way for a lot of things we have today like worker's compensation and labour laws, but I really don't think that in most industries in todays day and age they're completely necessary. I mean I'd really love to just stop working until my boss/employer breaks and gives me what I want, but I really personally disagree with things happening that way because it usually involves holding the public hostage.
